| Dual subs: stacking or placement? | Josh Studrawa May 17, 2001 12:50 PM | | Looking to purchase another Mirage FRx-S15. I've heard mention of stacking subs on top of each other. Was this for subs that were specifically made to stack (ie. special feet, clips, etc)? Or any and all? Rcommendations?

I think the increase over one sub is about 6db. Experiment with the location of the new sub and leave it where it yields the best results. I am using duals but they are not stacked. The reason I add the second sub was to correct some null spots in the room. Stacking would not have corrected the problem. My are placed front L/R. If your adding a second sub to increase output, try it. I might consider using rubber caps over the feet. No spikes! Enjoy |

| Alternative to stacking dual subwoofers | Richard Greene May 18, 2001 11:00 AM | | You will get closest to the theoretical +6dB from adding another powered subwoofer if both are stacked in a room corner playing mono bass. That may look awful. An alternative that looks better is to place one sub in the front right corner and the other in the front left corner -- both playing mono bass. These locations will cause acoustical interference and cost you 1dB to 3dB in lost output (and slightly rougher frequency response). The advantage of using two corners on the same side of the listening room is better integration with your front speakers compared with two subs in a single corner. I'm assuming the listener would be sitting roughly equal distances from both subwoofers, or else there will be phase problems. Placing TWO subwoofers in different non-corner positions will result in a rougher frequency response and possibly no more output than using a SINGLE subwoofer located in a room corner. The probability of smoothing out in-room bass frequency response by using two subwoofers in different positions is slim to none. |
