SPL Calibration HelpAdam

Guys I am just going nuts. Here is my problem. When using the internal test tones of the Denon it assumes that 0db is reference. When I use the SPL meter to find out where I need to make asjustments with 0 being 75db I have to do the following:
Front Left: decrease db by 4
Front Right: decrease db by 4
Center: decrease db by 4
Rear: Leave as is

Then if I reset all these adjustments back to 0 and use Video Essentials to calibrate it's a whole different story. When I get to the Decoder Input Level Check I find that 75db on the SPL is at -18 on the Denon. Ok cool I say to myself so now I'll just calibrate the speakers next. Well when Video Essential runs the test tones I find I have to do the following adjustments:

Front Left and Right: Increase by 7db
Center: Increase by 7db
Rears: Increase by 9db

Now I am no newbie and I 'm not a genious either but what the heck gives? Furthermore should I be calibrating based on Video Essentials or the internal test tones of the Denon?

My thoughts are that if I calibrate based on the internal test tones then all audio I listen to (CD, MD, etc) will have the speakers calibrated correctly. However if I calibrate based on Video Essentials then the speakers are only calibrated correctyl for DVD.

Please help a confused man out.

Thanks

Adam

Doesn't sound good.
A couple of questions since I am not familiar with your DEnon.
Why do you think 0 is assumed as reference? Does the volume control automatically turns to 0 indication and get 75dB at your sitting position or after a trim by 4 db?
When you slap the VE in where do you turn the volume control to get 75db spl reading? Don't reset the settings after you do the internal test tone.
"When I get to the Decoder Input Level Check "
Not sure what this is. Is this also used with the internal test tones as well?

0 is reference level as stated in the manual, if you go to the internal test tones to do a level check it automatically throw the volume level to 0. Then it will cycle test tones to each speaer and give you the chane to adjust +/- deciabls. So at 0 for the internal test tones I would have to decrease the Front 3 speakes each by -4 and leave the rears as is.

When I use VE I clear out the internal test tones settings. I was trying to run a compariosn between calibrating via internal test tones or VE.

The Decoder Input Level Check is on the VE disc it is a long beep noise that you use to determine what 75db is on the volume control (for me it is -18). It is the section right beofre VE sends test tones out o each speaker.

I'm trying to figure out if calibrating via internal test tones is best or using VE. the internal test tone numbers seem more accurate. any thoughts.

Just for fun, set the levels witht he internal test tone as you did before. Then, without changing, go to the VE test tone without using the decoder input test and compare the two.
I think I asked the same question....justin
