JVC 723GD Review Plus DVD AudioAdam

Well boys and ahem any ladies out there I've had my JVC 723GD for 3 days now and I thought you all were entitled to a review especially since I have some many posts over the lasts few days about which Progressive Scan DVD player to buy.

The first thing that stands out is how nice it looks I mean it just looks beautiful. I was surprised as most are about how lite it is. Not neccessarily a negative just something I noticed. The second thing I noticed was the speed that the tray opened and closed: remarkably fast and smooth.

Well I put it through the ropes trying to see how much of a difference there was between Progressive Scan mode and Interlaced mode. I was impressed very nice job JVC. Gladiator was simply OUTSTANDING!!! Now I'm not saying night and day difference but enough to make you turn your head. Well the DVD picture was oviouls great but what about the audio? Well surprisingly enough the 723GD yieded the same output (using SPL meter) as the XV567GD and the 523GD. Basically it was a solid performer. SO as a Progressive Scan DVD player I give it a 4.5 out of 5 and as a Interlaced DVD player it gets a 4 outta 5.

Now the DVD audio, well JVC included a sampler disc in the packaging and all I can say is WOW. I mean I thought that DTS cds were amazing but DVD Audio is just well WOW. the seperation in the music was well you guessed it WOW. There is a track from YES that is a live song (don't remember the name) from the House of Blues, I mean you really feel like you are in the crowd. I can't wait to demo more. If you haven't heard DVD audio yet you really owe it to yourself to listen to it. As a DVD Audio player (nothing to really compare it to though) it get's 4.5 outta 5.

Other cool features is a Zoom function, jog dial for fast forwarding, and the best feature YOU CAN TURN THE DISPLAY OFF. God I wish I could that on all components ofr night time watching.

So what's wrong with it you ask well 2 things. The first is the lack of a A->B repeat fucntion. What were they thinking and the other is just a piss poor manual.

I wish it played MP3s like the Panasonic RP61 and RP91 but for the 279.00 I paid for it from one call (i had a 60.00 credit from the Carver C1000 I returned) it's a steal.

I would say that if MP3 playback is not important then is certainly the best bang for the buck Progressive Scan DVD player out there.

Actually you can't dim the display, you can turn it on or off by the display on and off button located at the left hand side of the front panel. I also have this unit (D721BK) black model and am very satisfied with it.
Yee-haw...thanks.Snakebit

I have Shawshank inthe background, and I just heard the warden use the word obtuse, which is what I was for not checking the front panel. I was only checking the remote and the on-screen display.
