| Pick my system for me!! | JT99 May 17, 2001 11:16 PM | | I was wondering if any of you guys could help me pick my system. I've narrowed it down to the following components.
Receiver:
Denon 1601
Denon 1801
Onkyo 484
Onkyo 575x (Refurbished)
Marantz SR5000 (Refurbished)
Speakers:
B&W 303s
B&W 602s
Paradigm Atoms
Paradigm Mini Monitors
Sub:
Velodyne CT 100
Velodyne VLF 810
B&W ASW 500
Klipsch KSW 10
Other speakers are to be added as budget permits. Room size is 10 by 13.5, with 50-50 HT/music use. I want to have a pretty neutral sounding system with no (or minimal) lower midrange/upper bass gap. Feel free to suggest any components not listed. Thanks all! |
| Good selection | Bryan May 18, 2001 7:05 AM | | But the Onkyo TX-DS484 has been replaced by the 494 and I'd add the Yamaha RX-V420. We also need to know the overall budget and then we can go from there. Without that knowledge, I'd say the 494 (though the 575x is pretty tempting), B&W 303s, and Velodyne CT-100. |
| re: Pick my system for me!! | JT99 May 18, 2001 12:55 PM | | I'd like to spend around $1100 if possible. I don't suppose you know when the 494 is coming out btw? |
| re: Pick my system for me!! | Debra May 19, 2001 7:33 AM | | Your proposed choices are all excellent. The only problem I see is the B & W speakers (great speakers) but they don't discount and will consume your whole budget.I have modest klipsch speakers RB5s and Sb3 rears. 3s can be had for 140/ea and will fill 10 x 13.5 room. If they are too harsh see if paradign can be had at discount somewhere.I know Yamaha receivers are "one scoop vanilla" but your could pick up a new 496 etal. cheap and avoid the anxiety of refurbished. |
| re: Pick my system for me!! | Ken from AZ May 19, 2001 10:21 AM | | Good choices to start. My recommendations from your list:
Onkyo 575x,B&W 602s,B&W ASW 500
Other considerations:
HK210,Klipsch RF-3,Klipsch KSW12
Yamaha 5220,Monitor Audio Model 3,Energy E-XL510 |
| re: Pick my system for me!! | Ryan M. May 19, 2001 2:07 PM | | My suggestion to you: Marantz SR5000 Paradigm Atoms Klipsch KSW10 Reasons: The Marantz receivers are very nice. Especially when matched with Paradigm speakers. I've auditioned or heard all the equipment on this list except the Velodyne subs. The SR5000 is very detailed, energetic, and just makes everything sound natural. Sorry, I'm not full of adjectives. It has more life and body than the Denon receivers, which I find boring to listen to. I'd consider it slightly better than the Onkyo. The Paradigm Atoms are very good "bang for your buck" speakers. They provide a good entry-level audiophile sound for only about $150/pair. They're even cheaper if you can come up to Canada to get them. I also found that they had more detail than the B&W speakers. They can also output a fair amount of volume. The Mini Monitors are, in my opinion, too small for home theater use. They are decent for music, as long as you have a sub, but are not very good for home theater. They simply don't go very deep. If you were to choose between the two B&W speakers, I would suggest the 602s for sure. But remember the 602s are about $550 if I'm not mistaken, and you can get much better speakers for that money. If you wanted to spend around that amount, I'd suggest looking at the Paradigm Reference Studio 20s. You will NOT be disappointed - I guarantee. As far as the subs are concerned, I felt that the Klipsch had a tighter, yet still more powerful feel than the B&W sub. As mentioned, I have not heard the Velodyns. Hope this helps! |
