Question on Dynamic Range!jefflam79
May 18, 2001 10:25 AM
I'm still having trouble with my set up. Yamaha rxv620 and Def Tech Procinema100. When my Dynamic range on my receiver is set to max, dialog is very quiet compared to the loud effects. When I set it to normal and turn the volume up it fixes the problem but the gunshots and explosions are just not as dynamic and real. Maybe it's all in my head. What should I do? Keep it at normal DR and increase the master volume, or put it on max and just kick up the Center channel volume? Can anyone explain a little on dynamic range and what it does? Anyone else have this problem?

Try leaving your dynamic range on normal, and adding bass level, either loudness, or super bass, or cinema bass, etc. I'm not sure what the setting on that receiver reads. Try also, if you can, cutting frequency on subs or increasing volume to them. Hope this helps.

Dynamic Range= The difference between the loudest, and softest passages.

Dynamic Range control= Adjusts the difference between the loudest and softest sound(compression)

I have a few questions for you.

1. Have you balanced your speakers?
2. Are all your speakers equidistant(identical distance) from the listening position.
3. Is your center on top of your television angled down toward the listening position.

Put your compression on normal, and try these things first. Your problem might not be compression at all, but miscalibration.

I also have a Yamaha receiver--mainly wanted to tell you there is nothing wrong with the equipment. This problem plagues almost everyone. I have tried every combination that exists and all are a tradeoff. Manny has the best suggestion for ht--you frankly just have to remember to reset the sub level and frequency up when when you listen to music again. I suspect someone is working on a way to "auto boost" the center during loud passages, but I haven't seen it. The problem defeats the main purpose of center channel which is of course clear dialogue in the midst of action
