I know it's out there because I've seen it before. But,
What is the optimal viewing distance for a 32 inch TV? Isn't there a formula to figure it out or something?

Thanxs a bunch in advance
chad
I've been wondering the same thing for my 27"jefflam79

What distance is best for a 27" and does it change when you watch 1.33:1, 1.85:1, and 2.35:1 widescreen?

Anyone out there have the standard?

t is recommended to sit 8 feet from 27 inch, 11 feet form 32 inch and 12 feet from 36 inch television.
Also the three-times-screen rule is also valid. 27*3=81 inch=6.75 feet
For 32 inch: 32*3=96 inch=8 feet.

Depending on your room arrangements and comfortable viewing distance, any distance between the two recommended distances should work for you.

Jefflam:

I am not sure about distance for other different ratio screen for 27 inch. Even if the viewing distance is different between screen ratio, 4:3 ratio as oppose to 16:9, I am sure you don't want to move your chair or sofa back an forth as you switch from DVD to regular TV. Unless you have some wheels underneath the sofa, I would stick with recommended viewing distance with 4:3 TV screen. It just make sense.

Take care.

umm....the beginning of your post said 11 feet for a 32 inch TV. However, according to the 3 times screen ruke, the distance is 8 feet. Which is it?
That is a good question.Smokey

Well, three-times-screen rule is based on the visibility of scan lines on a TV screen. This rule set the minimum distance from watching TV without scan lines being too distractive.

The recommended distance of 11 feet for 32 inch, also take into account the light output of TV screen and pleasure of watching TV without eye fatigue. 11 feet is an average value that can varied according to you HT set up and viewing habit.
The room lighting play an important role here. If the room is well lit, then 3 times screen rule ( absolute minimum viewing distance) might work best for you. But, if you watch TV in total darkness you will find that 3 times rule ( 8 feet) although valid, is little bit eye fatiguing. This is where you come in, choose a distance between 8 and 11 feet that suit best to your situation.

you are the king of your domain. So exercise your power and make your own distance rule.

Read Smokey's post again. He gives two recommended distances for each screen size. He goes on to say that any distance between the two recommended distances should work.
