Why does my Wega TV start in 16:9 mode?Redshifter

My Sony Wega (kv27fs12) when I turn it on starts in 16:9 mode (anamorphic squeeze) which is wrong. Even if I turn off 16:9 mode, turn the TV off, and turn it back on its back in 16:9 mode. It should start in 4:3 mode for cable TV. Does anyone know a fix for this?

Thanks.

I adjusted the "ASP" aspect setting in the service mode and fixed my original problem. Another question:

Why is it when I watch a movie in 16:9 the mat is narrower than when I watch it at 4:3 setting? For example, with X-Men, the aspect ratio is narrower than 16:9. Watching with anamorphic 16:9 off, the image starts maybe 4 inches from the bottom of the screen. Watching with anamorphic on, the image starts 4.5 inches fromthe bottom of the screen. Now I know this isn't a problem with the original digital transer mat being too narrow, because the aspect ratio of X-Men is narrower than 16:9. Does anyone know a fix in the service menu that will expand the aspect ratio vertically of 16:9 on a Wega kv27fs12 set without affecting regular 4:3 viewing, so it will match up with the correct aspect ratio of non-anamorphic viewing?

I'll be really impressed if someone can answer this one.

switch your DVD PLAYER to 16:9 !! (get back to me if I misunderstood your question)

by the way, X-Men is not 16x9 (1.78:1)...it's in a ratio of 2.35:1 and enhanced for widescreen/16x9 TVs (and TVs with 16:9 mode like the Wega)

Chuckster... I wish it were that easy... My DVDP is set to 16:9. My problem is that when my DVDP is set to 16:9 I get a different aspect ratio on the film than watching it in non-anamorphic mode (4:3). They should be exactly the same aspect ratio, with just the higher resolution of 16:9. But they are not. In 16:9 mode there is a WHOLE INCH difference vertically in aspect ratio. This is WAY too much.

I realise X-Men is not 1.78:1. That is why I chose it to test this problem. If I tested using a 1.78:1 or less aspect ratio movie (like Big Lebowski or Excalibur) it might be a factor of the aspect ratio of the original film print being WIDER than 16:9, thus there would be an explainable difference in aspect ratio vertical width between anamorphic and non-anamorphic widescreen. By using a movie that has a narrower vertical aspect ratio than 16:9 (like X-Men) my test proves that the anamorphic mode of either my Wega or my DVDP is squishing the image too much, thus the one inch difference in aspect ratios between anamorphic and non.

In the service menu I noticed there is a setting for ASP, or aspect width. Is this the same as the verticle height setting, or does it just affect anamorphic? You see, I want my anamorphic mode to give me exactly the same aspect ratio as watching in non-anamorphic-but-widescreen. Right now it doesn't, and every time I adjusted the aspect height in the service mode and/or the verticle height, I could get it correct in anamorphic but not non (using a THX video test disc).

Sorry for the long post, but I'm trying to explain a complicated technical issue. I've been to your website Chuckster so I know you know what you're talking about. I know this seems complicated but do you understand what the problem is?

Thanks.

This is the issue I thought you were talking about, but I wasn't sure how knowledgeable you were. Some of the boys over at hometheaterforum.com inquired about Wegas squishing too much. There were many claims, and the most agreed upon was that the Wegas aren't perfect...until you calibrate!

Here're a couple statements:

"Most likely your TV is oversqueezing. This is a common problem with Sony televisions. The best way to know for sure what the proper height should be is to get a disc like Avia and pull up the "circle" patterns. If you do not get a perfect circle then there's a problem. I'd bet that in anamorphic mode your circle will be wider than tall. The 16.2 inches probably assumes no overscan. With horizontal overscan the proper height will be taller."

"That measurement is not accounting for the overscan on the left and right sides. Get the circle pattern from VE or AVIA. If the circle is squashed vertically, then your set is indeed oversqueezing. My HS10 oversqueezed by about 1.5". Without measuring the circle with a ruller, I didn't really see how far it was off."

Here's the entire thread (I did the same thing and figured the guy didn't have his player set to 16:9):

My set does not have an ASP1 setting (supposedly changes only the 16:9 mode aspect ratio). It does have an ASP setting, but changing that to fix the oversqueezing in 16:9 changes the aspect of 4:3 viewing by overstretching it vertically. Is there a way to tweak the ASP setting and some other setting(s) in conjunction that will fix this?

That thread had some info, but the only conclusion I could see from it was I'd have to change the aspect setting BY HAND every time I wanted to watch a 16:9 disc!!! Please tell me there's another fix for this!

You or someone must have screwed with the Service Menu and saved settings while in 16:9 mode. Just go back into the menu and save (muting + enter) with 16:9 enhanced mode turned off
