How do I know if DVD playing CD is producing PCM or MPEG?Satz

Hi all,
question: When playing an audio CD on my DVD which is fed optically into a DD/DTS/PCM decoder receiver...how do I know that the signal is going out as PCM or as something else?

I'm quite confused... The display on the receiver (denon 2801) show Dolby Digital when playing DVD movies but I think it only show ProLogic when playing CDs (which I took to mean analog)?

In fact, come to think of it, it also show prologic when playing some extras on DVD. Is that normal?

thanks

The CD player is sending a digital signal in 2 channels (it was recorded that way). The Denon will decode it into it's 2 channels, so playing it in ProLogic tries to force it into a main and L/R supports. Not a good way to listen, IMO. Use stereo or 5ch stereo or a try a DSP if you want.

And Dolby Digital is nothing more then a pimped out ProLogic. It's just being more specific. If you'll notice, when you go to the mode after "stereo" it says ProLogic DVD, then shows DD after the movie starts. You're still in ProLogic mode, just specifically DD.

The extras on the DVD are in 2 channel again, so you're not going to show the DD, just ProLogic. Only things recorded in 5.1 will get the DD.

Hope that helped. Hope it was correct also.

Dolby Digital is a different thing than Pro Logic. Pro Logic creates the different channels from a matrix two channels. Dolby Digital provides 5.1 discrete channels.

When the receiver shows Pro Logic in movie menus and extra stuff is because the receiver is being fed two channel information and it defaults to PL to try to produce the 5.1 output.

About the cd player, your dvd will output a PCM stream to your receiver, but if you have the DD mode on, it woll try to accomodate that two channel PCM signal and use PL.
If you are still worried about it you can set your dvd to output only PCM (i think all dvd players have this option), but then you will not have DD or DTS out.

I try to think of PL and DD as the same just more channels. Basically they are. They're both Dolby, just DD has more channels essentially. In laymans terms the concept works. It's not important to know how they work, just how to set your receiver for them.

For CDs, just leave the DVD player on Bitstream and set the Denon to stereo mode. No need for PCM switching. That's when you want the player to decode for you. Send ALL signals to the receiver via Bitstream and let the Denon sort them out.

yeap, I guess you are right, it is easier to undestand that way . . .

My dvd does not have an inboard decoder and still I have to select which signal I want output to the receiver. My choices are PCM, DD/Bitstream and Auto (or something like that).
I set it for Auto and everything works.
