| DVD-A decoding with rcvr lacking 6 channel analog inputs? | tedman Jul 5, 2001 6:34 AM | | I have a Technics SADX940 surround sound receiver with 3 digital inputs via TosLink connections. Because my rcvr lacks the 6 analog inputs, will the info be decoded properly by my receiver when using the digital input? |
| Sorry Bud, you're out of luck... | darryl Jul 5, 2001 7:07 AM | | DVD-Audio can only be decoded in the player and outputted through 5.1 analog outputs - which then need to be connected to a receiver with 6 channel discrete analog inputs for powering the speakers. I believe you should still be able to get one of the other formats that are usually included on a DVD-Audio disc though - 2-channel stereo mix and/or Dolby Digital 5.1/DTS 5.1 (provided your receiver has a Dolby Digital and/or DTS decoder). |
| Sorry Bud, you're out of luck... | GadgetTony Jul 5, 2001 8:26 AM | | I need some clarification on the issue of DVD-A. Isn't DVD-A encoded for 5.1 channels? I have the JVC XVD723GD, which features DVD-Audio, and plan on buying a Yamaha STR5460 (DD and DTS). My speaker setup (JBL NSP1 and PB10)will consist of 4 satellites, a center channel and sub. Will this setup be adequate to get DVD-A in it's "full glory"? If not, what is missing out of the equation?
Also, is there a certain way that a DVD-A speaker configuration needs to be hooked up (perhaps different than a 5.1 home theater setup?)?
Thanks. |

DVD-A players (nor does any AVR) do not have bass management for the DVD-A portion. In other words, they send full freqency to all speakers. If you don't have full range speakers in any part of your speaker setup, the non full range ones will "bottom out" badly, therefore resulting in a bad sound!
I have full range speakers all around and can tell you (will write more on this later.....stay tuned for the good and the bad.....not much bad about it though!) that with the right setup, DVD-A is BY FAR the best audio experience short of actually being present when the actual instrument is being played!

What exactly are "full range" speakers? The bookshelf speakers I have been testing out at the store perform very close to the bigger speakers available there. |

| Yeap, it is different | IsmaVA Jul 5, 2001 10:35 AM | | DVD-A is a different format . . . |
