Long cable runs to a projector?ebp_si
Jul 5, 2001 9:43 AM
What is the best way to connect source components to a projector? Assuming the location of the equipment rack will require a 30ft. run of cable, can S-Video be used? I was under the impression that S-video cables started degrading signal quality after about 3 ft. What are other options?

Thanks for any help!

Hi epb

Good quality S-video that utilize two integrated coax cable design should be fine up to about 40-50 feet. But if you can cut the run to 25 feet that would be more ideal situation as far as signal integrity goes. There are pre-assemble S-video cables for 25 feet that utilize the dual coax run that would be perfect for your situation.

Goo luck

Thanks for the info, Smokey- I had no idea anybody made coaxial S-video cables.

Do you know how long component video cables can be before you start seeing degradation of signal quality? Or possibly RGB cables? I am having a tough time finding any information at all on this subject!

For regulare cables, stay under 12 feet.Smokey

HI Epb

I don't think you will find a specific recommend length because every manufactures have their own recommended length for their cables.

But from electrical point of view, I would not buy any off shelf items( found in RadioShack and BestBuy) that are more than 12 feet long. If these type of cables run more than 12 feet you may run into problems such as signal attenuation and noise pick up.
That is why if you have to run more than 12 feet such as your case, I would opt for a cable that is designed for longer runs such as the S-vdeo I recommended that utilize dual coax design.

For long component video run I would purchase pre-assembled R-G6 coax cable and then terminate each end with Female-F to RCA adapters. These type of Coax cable not only will have superior shielding capability than regulte RCA cables, they also have lower attenuation figure which is critical on long length cables.

I hope this helped.
