The 1800 is an excellent receiver. I have the newer model (1801) and absolutely love it (though I may be buying a 3801 before the summer's over. It has a lower power rating than some but is extremely adequate for any bookshelf system and most towers (I run the Mirage FRx-7). 2 assignable optical inputs for a DVD player and CD transport, plus 5 channel stereo, plus very nice build quality and customer support. Shouldn't run you more than $350 online or price matched.
Spend the rest on a good speaker setup such as the Energy Take 5.2 system or the Mirage AVS500 line. |
| Specific budget? | Bryan Jul 6, 2001 7:14 AM | | Only get the progressive scan dvd player if your tv has that capability or you will be getting one shortly. |
| Specific budget? | KenJ Jul 6, 2001 11:33 AM | | My budget is a little over 1k... The progressive scan DVD player will only reap benefits on new style high quality tvs? Wheres a good place to buy online? My tv is currently not the new style and I probably will not upgrade for a little while. |
| IMO, get the cheapest regular DVD player... | Josh Studrawa Jul 6, 2001 11:45 AM | | and spend most on speaks. They'll last you the longest. For $150 now, you can get a DVD player that does everything except for prog scan. And in a year, you can get a prog scan when you get a new TV, you can move the DVD player to the bedroom (you'll need it there as well since by then you'll have a nice DVD collection).
IMO don't pay for a feature that you can't use, especially in a component that will have other features you want (ie prog scan II or super video FX crap) after the prog scan. Would suck to have to upgrade the prog scan without even using it.
Look at www.pricescan.com and some Yahoo! searches work too. Sears will price-match internet prices also. |
| Hmmmmmmm | Bryan Jul 9, 2001 8:13 AM | | $1K for speakers, sub, receiver, and dvd player. Yikes! The Panasonic RV-31 dvd player is among the best there are in the $200 price range. If you want a progressive scan player, you will not have any money left over for speakers after you got a receiver. For a receiver, set aside $250 or so for that. Look at option box specials at Best Buy and Circuit City. Used gear also may work. For new receivers, the Denon AVR-1801, Onkyo TX-DS494, and Yamaha RX-V420 will qualify. Moving on to speakers you will have a limited selection, especially since you want speakers and a sub for under $550. The Energy Take 5 package with the sub will work or you have the JBL NSP1 with the Sony SA-WM40 sub. Also look at the offerings from HomeTheaterDirect.com, nOrh.com, AscendAcoustics.com, and av123.com. Perhaps go with a pair of Paradigm Titans and the CC170 center and also the Sony sub. You won't have any rear speakers for now but that will be a better system overall. IMO, get a cheap receiver (one of those mentioned), the Panasonic dvd player, and use the rest of the money for a pair of speakers (get the center as well if you can). Good subs will run you $400 on up. The Sony sub is a decent one at an excellent price. |
