Heres the AVR-3802......I think!k00k

Heres a link to the Japanese equivalent of the AVR-3802. Hopefully this is correct and will fill in any blanks. Wait a second for the page to load then translate. Link blatantly stolen from Krishna at AVS forum. He's in Tokyo, he should know. Click on the pic for a close-up.

Looks like we get another optical (making 3) and a very nice wattage upgrade. Missed the rest, only scanned the article.
Looks promisingk00k

Yep, there seems to be good improvements on both. Just waiting to see what the 2802 offers. Will be ordering one of them eventually. Everything else for my first setup is ordered and on its way. No receiver. :( Want DPL2.

WIth the power increase in the 1802...Josh Studrawa
Jul 6, 2001 7:58 AM
isn't that going to negate the niche for the 2801/2? Or does the 1802 not come with DPL2?
I think there is no 2802Kirit

I just posted an article for Denon's new models and as per the company (Denon) 2801 will not be discontinued so looks like you will have to wait for long or go with either 1802 or 3802.

You get the one extra optical, DPL II, and not a major power increase. This is the exact quote:

"Rated Output: 110Wx7(8 ohms, 20 20Hz -kHz, T.H.D.0.05%)/150W (6 ohms, 1kHz, T.H.D.0.7%)"

The 180w I'm sure you are talking about seems to be dynamic power.

Essentially for 5 more watts per channel, dpl-2, and an input you too can pay 400.00 more.

I'm not belittling it but what do you expect, it's pretty hatd to top the 3801.
I meant the 10 more watts in the 1802..Josh Studrawa

from 70 to 80. Was thinking about maybe upgrading to the 1802.

As much as I want it, the 3800 series is out of my wallet's range right now.
So what should I get?k00k

This is my first HT setup, and I've only been looking into this whole scene seriously for the last month or so. This is everything else I'm getting;

Loewe Xelos 5381 ZW
Toshiba SD-200E DVD
4 x B&W DM303
B&W LCR3 centre
Aaron Sub-120 (Australian)100Wrms Dual 8" cones
Denon ??02 Receiver

I presume I just hook from DVD player component output direct to component input on Xelos. Do I need the 3802 for its component hookups? The component output on the Toshiba was a big selling point for me since DVD is encoded in component(hope I'm getting this right). Is any of this making sense?

I'm just not sure if I would need to go to 3802 if 1802/2802 would be sufficient. My room is only 13x15.

Thanks for any advice/info/flaming.

About the only thing the 3801/2 is going to give you over the 1801 is:

1) more power, but I don't think you need it with those speakers

2) More decoding "junk". You may want it if you plan to upgrade to 7 speakers later. It may be "future-proof", but if you never need the options, why pay for them? I myself am not going to need a 6.1 or 7.1 setup within the next 3 years, I can't imagine.

3) Less money. The 1802 will retail at $499 I imagine and the 3802 will be $999+ (did I see that posted here?). That's a MAJOR hit in the old checkbook.

4) More swithing options with the 3802. IMO, I leave the audio stuff doing audio stuff. Buy a $29 Radio Shack remote that has macros and let the video run direct (you had that correct).

Honestly, with your setup, the 1802 will fit perfectly. The 3802 will be a lot more money and may give you that "I need to upgrade my stuff since I have this killer receiver" bug. In all seriousness, I talk about getting this and that, but in the real world all I need is a set of rears and I am finished (except for playing aroung with new cables) since I have a dedicated CD transport now thanks to Adam.

If you plan on always upgrading your HT, then look harder at the 3802. But if you want a very decent setup that you can be happy with and leave it to do it's job, grab the 1802. Up to you.
Remote with macros?k00k

Thanks for that advice Josh. I think you have pretty well made my mind up for me. I dont want to get the upgrade bug just yet, since this is my first HT setup.

Can you explain what the remote with macros will do. Sorry to be a pain. Major HT newbie here.

thanks

Give you the ability to program a sequence of actions into one button. For instance you could have one macro that turns on your TV, receiver, and cable box, then turns the TV to channel 12. OR you oculd have another one that turns on your receiver, cd player, and goes to disc 5.

How ridiculous of Denon to feed on the minds of those with the upgrade bug. Now they have the 3802, quick, go to the 'marketplace' and put an ad to sell the 3801. WHY?
For an extra 5W/channel?
For an extra input? OR for that top notch format(sarcasm)DPL-II?
Give me a break! For all those prosective buyers thinking between a 3802 and 1802 or whatever. Do yourselves a big favor and find a decent bargain on the 3801. Do not fall a prey to this gimmick played by countless manufacturers.
The 3801 is a solid receiver and one that you won't regret for a long long time. Common Denon, at least you could have thrown in THX or something or even looked different. What a waste of time.

The 3802 will have a better manual. I'd pay 400.00 for a manual that can be read and understood before I paid 400.00 for DPL II.
