DVD Progressive scan questionsweierman

I am interested in the Sony DVP-NS700P, a cheaper progressive scan DVD player. Right now, I have a 27" normal TV (Sharp), but plan on getting a HDTV in the next couple years. Two questions: 1)Will this DVD player work on my "normal" TV until I upgrade? 2) Would I be better off buying a "cheap" DVD player that's non progressive scan but has other features (5-disc changer, etc.) that I value until I actually do upgrade to a 43" HDTV? I guess a third question..does anybody have any comments about the DVP-NS700P? I haven't seen any online reviews of it yet....Thanks!

I would not do it. The S700P uses the same chip as the Sony 9000ES which has the chroma bug. I have seen and have heard that the 700P emits worse picture than the 9000ES. I would look at the Panasonic RP56, RP61, and the JVC SA70 and SA75 and the Denon 2800.

To answer your questions:

1. It will work but not in progressive scan mode.
2. Nope, the cost of DVD players with progressive scan is ridiculously cheap all the models I mentioned are sub 350.00.

"1)Will this DVD player work on my "normal" TV until I upgrade? "

Yes. All progressive scan players can ouput a normal 480i signal as well.

"2) Would I be better off buying a "cheap" DVD player that's non progressive scan but has other features (5-disc changer, etc.) that I value until I actually do upgrade to a 43" HDTV? "

I think you would. Two years is more than enough time for even better players than the ones currently available (even the 700P) to come on the market.

"I guess a third question..does anybody have any comments about the DVP-NS700P?"

Although I haven't seen it, I do know a couple things about it's performance so far. One, it uses a new Sony proprietary deinterlacing (progressive-scan) solution that is said to be better than the solutions used in others players in it's price cateogory.
Second, like many other progressive players on the market, it suffers from a minor bug that prevents it from converting the color information off of DVD's perfectly (a.k.a., a chroma-upsampling error). Those two things being said, there have been several folks posting on the www.hometheaterforum.com site that are very pleased with this new player.

Thanks for your help; it does seem like by the time I have extra cash for a bigscreen HDTV (not the top priority for me..) there will be even better and cheaper progressive scan models available. What I am a little confused about is the conflicting opinions about the Sony model. I guess I'll have to see it running for myself to figure it out...Thanks again!
