Do Curtains give a "solid" enough surface for...Kam

refractions? I.e. i have a big empty opening to the foyer from my living room along one side of my home theater and currently have curtains up to create more of a uniform surface to match the other wall. It sounds ok, but still sounds as if the right side fades a little. Not sure if it is just my imagination since I've been tweaking so much, I don't know. Didn't know if the curtain fabric was enough of a "solid" surface or if cloth (100% cotton) was sonically transparent enough to not make a theoretical difference. (i can hear one, but placebo's cure diseases too).

You mean "reflections", right? The curtains are better than nothing, assuming they're made of fairly thick material, but they don't do as much as you might think. Try it with the curtains open and see if there's a difference. Otherwise, try moving the speakers around (if possible) to create a better balance.
T, you can stop typing, I got this one...Josh Studrawa

Kidding :)

But curtains are only going to work above a certain frequency, say where the waves are real tight (Khz ranges and up). Your bass and midrange is flying right thru them like they weren't there. In all practicality, you're going to need doors :( And there's no way you can reflect the LFE channel back into the room (something about 3 feet of material needed at 300Hz or something).

I'm close I think, but I was a terrible student. Sorry Prof. Greene and Mr. T.
I agree with you.Dick Hertz

As I said, the curtains don't do much. Try it w/o and see what it sounds like.
Sorry, DH. Wasn't trying to one-up you.Josh Studrawa

Just expanding on your point and trying to see if I could remember that technical stuff.
