Onboard decoder or built in decoder.Edlela

I have a Toshiba dvd player with built in DTS and DD decoding. I'm about to upgrade to a DTS/DD receiver, and my question is, should I use an optical input to the receiver and use the receiver's decoder? Or should I be sure to get a receiver with Six Channel inputs and use the DVD's decoder? I'd imagine this may depend upon the receiver and I haven't decided on that yet, but any general thoughts would be helpful.

Thanks!!
Well, seeing as Toshiba makes the world's best DVD players...Josh Studrawa

I'd still opt for the decoder in the receiver. I have no idea why, I am simply spewing forth the opinions that I have read here. If it helps, they've all suggested that. They say as a general rule the DAC's in receivers are higher quality. But I honestly don't know how that affects the sound. Oh, and I have tried it both ways and I could not tell the difference. Just made sense to use 1 cable instead of 6. And it allows me to leave my DVD player output to Bitstream for both DVD and CD playback. Using the DAC in the Toshiba, required me to swap from 6ch and 2ch outs depending on source format.

I added the Toshiba bit myself. Good to see another Toshiba owner out there :)
Also another thing to consider....Smokey

As it stand right now, the only way you can take full advantage of DVD-Audio and SACD is to have six RCA audio on your receiver ( DTS/DD/DVD-Audio/SACD ready ). So if you are planing to upgrade DVD-Audio or SACD in the near future, then 6 discrete analog input sound like a logical option also.

Take care.
