What about Pioneer Elite?Kujo
Aug 13, 2001 7:00 PM
Hey, so everyone here talks about and recommends brands like Onkyo, Denon, Marantz, Yamaha for receivers, so how about Pioneer Elite? They're pretty expensive so I'm thinking they should be high end equipment. Specs seem to be impressive, so what's everyone's take on them? How do they stack up, both in terms of music and home theatre, I'm really interested to find out. cheers.

Here is a link for comparisons to the other brands you mention.

I've never read anything entirely negative about Pioneer Elite. I'm reasonably sure all their receivers are THX certified which speaks for itself. I know there are also quite a few Pioneer Elite TV people out there and they would have no other brand but. If your interested in a purchase IMO you could do a lot worse. Anyway, Pioneer must be doing something right, they have been around for many, many years.

If you watch this board long enough, just about all the top name brands come up sometime or other--it's just not Pioneer's turn again quite yet. You can also check the reviews for Pioneer Elite while on this site as well.

Yes there appears to be quite a few Denon lovers on this site. I bought my Pioneer about 6 months ago and just love it. Mind you it doesn't have prologic II or Dts discrete or Neo 6, but I didn't care about those things anyway. The DSPs on the pioneer are pretty good and the remote is fantastic. The build quality is superb and is really easy to use. The sound quality is really excellent on both 2 channel material and movies. It matches my paradigm moniter speakers very well. I only have a 5.1 setup so I can't comment on THX-EX material. I owned 2 Denon AVR 4800s and both crapped out on me in the first two weeks I owned them. Yes the Denon was rated to have more power but an extra 30 Watts does not really make that much difference in real world listening. Anyway I would suggest anyone shopping for a new receiver take a serious look at the pioneer elite stuff.

I could not be happier, and have the the model that has a histroy of crapping out. But I can say it still going strong after six months of non-stop playing, (24/7 powered up) still testing.

I have owned an Elite VSX-24TX for over 18 months, and I am very happy with it. My review is posted on this site. I wouldn't quite call the Elite line "high end", but it is a level above Technics, Kenwood and JVC gear. It is a competitor for the brands you mentioned. IMHO, they appeal to a slightly different consumer than the Onkyo, Denon, Yamaha and Marantz brands do. IMO, the Pioneer has a less forward, less bright sound than these other brands. I'm not saying it's better or worse than those brands, just different, and it may or may not appeal to you. I feel very strongly about the Elite build quality. They are rock solid, and function flawlessly. Currently, the Elite receivers are lagging a bit behind their competitors with regards to features. They have yet to introduce a 7 channel amplifier model or include Dolby Pro Logic II in any of their models. However, new top of the line models are being developed that will include these features. Pioneer is also withholding newer models pending the release of new THX standards (I know a lot of people will ask me about this - I have no details, I only know that THX standards are being revised later this year). Please read the reviews on this site of Pioneer Elite receivers. I think you'll see the pattern that people who own them generally like them, and would buy them again. Amongst their class, they are somewhat unique.
