Which is the best AVR in the $ 300 range?Ajay

I am planning to buy my first AVR and have budgetary constraints (US $ 300 range). As I am likely to use the AVR more for listening to music, than for watching movies, I would appreciate if someone can recommend an appropriate model. btw, would the new Denon 1602 be considered a good option?

thanks,
Ajay
Yes, IMO the Denon 1602 is tops under $300 if you can find (nt)Josh Studrawa

No experience with it. Just from reading this site, I've got it in my head that it's not as good. Since I never speak as fact (so the bad Mtry-monster won't get me), I get to say my opinion all the time. He wanted opinions, he got one. Worthless as it may be, it's ALL mine. :)

The new JVC models are getting better than average reviews. Then there is always Kenwood with the new Pro Logic II sound. If build qulity is a big issue, then Yamaha or Onkyo is [bar none] the best IMO.

But the AVR-1602 will go for around $350 or so now. You may want to get the Yamaha RX-V620 (may have to settle for the 420) or the Onkyo TX-DS494. All of those are your best bets.

Ajay,

Don't overlook Sherwood in this price range. I've owned two Sherwood Newcastle receivers and bought a Sherwood 6095R for my brother in law's second system (he has a Marantz SR7000 for his main HT system). The Sherwood is surprisingly good for the money. Check out reviews on this site and Ecoustics.com. I agree that Denon, Onkyo and Yamaha also make good receivers in this price range, but look at the comparisons done in Sound and Vision. The Sherwood held its own against the others and generally, was less expensive. UBID used to sell a lot of Sherwoods for good prices. I paid $150 delievered for the 6095R (it was new with full manufacturer's warranty. Sherwood was using UBID to dump excess inventory before introducing new models). Good luck.

Jim
