In order for SACD disc to be played on CD player, manufactures have to put a two channel CD track on top of SACD muti-track so CD player can read that track ( CD player can only read the CD track that has been layered on top of SACD tracks).
As of now Sony as major label player in SACD has refused to put a CD layer on SACD disc because Sony has said that it does not want to compete directly with its CD catalog.
Hybrid SACD disc....compatible with CD player ( top layer CD track)
Non-Hybrid SACD disc...not compatible with CD player( no top layer CD track)

Aug 15, 2001 12:53 PM | | If Sony, with so much R&D invested in SACD really wants to make SACD a universal format, a logical step would be to begin to issue all of Sony's CD label catalog as dual layer CD/SACD discs without increasing the cost. It can be done, and if Sony wants to do it, they will. Look at how quickly Sony responded to the price drop in DVD-Audio players by announcing much less expensive and multi-channel SACD players. They know how to play hardball with the competition. |

I also read that DMP will phase out its CDs and go with SACDs exclusively. No idea why Sony sticks with single-layered SACDs. |
