Distance between front speakers and TV?Here's Johnny!

How far away should the front speakers be from the TV? Would a farther distance create a better stereo image, or would everything fall apart when the speakers are too far apart? Because I would like them kinda far apart for multi-channel stereo so it fills the room better for that.

Speaker placement is very room sensitive. Take a few hours and spend time experimenting to see what works best. A couple very general rules for speaker placement are: 1) Close to a wall is almost always a bad idea. Speakers should be no closer that 1-2 ft. from front or side walls. 2) Make sure your tweeters are at (or very close) to your ear level when seated.

Other things to try:

You may get a more stable and defined stereo image if you toe in your speakers such that they are aiming at your ears.

On my system, I have my mains placed about 7 ft apart (about 2ft from each side of the TV), and I sit about 9 ft. from each speaker. They seem to image better when they are toe-ed in. For TV/movies, they could be a little closer to the TV, but this isn't possible, since my mains are not magnetically shielded. Also, where they are now seems to be a good compromise between music and movies.

Johnny:
Personal preference, room acoustics, and room decor all come into play in positioning speakers, but a general rule of thumb is: the listening location from the speakers and the distance between the speakers should come fairly close to being an equilateral triangle, give or take. This is not something that's cast in stone at all - feel free to experiment for yourself. Just don't get the speakers too close together or you'll lose most of your stereo separation. Of course, unless you live alone, the other listening positions need to be taken into account too.

Hope this helps

like the other post said it is a matter of room size and makeup. I have mine mounted on the walls, so there is no 1'-2' from the wall (maybe 6"), my mains are 12'apart in a 14'by 30'room. The center is equally between them causing a large sound stage in the front.

(In the movie Proof of Life) when the you here the tapping from the front door (it start from the right speaker then moves center) I thought someone was knocking on my door.

My mains and rears are angled down about 30 degrees, but not toed in and the sound I get is wonderful even with music. The height of the speakers causes a room filling sound that lets you sit anywhere in the room and get good sound. having a sub helps with this type of setup so you don't have to be concern about the bass.

I know many people place their front speakers right at the sides of the TV screen. The logic employed is that if sounds on the left side of the picture eminate from a point far off screen to the left, it will be distracting and unnatural. I don't find that to be the case for me, though. My front speakers are set fairly wide apart, about one foot away from the screen on either side. I sit only about 7 to 8 feet back, and the speakers are about 6 feet apart. I feel that unless the speakers are designed to radiate a very narrow sound pattern, that they do not have to be placed up against the TV. In a THX system, with speakers that have a focused sound radiation pattern, placement against the sides of the TV would make sense. For non-THX speakers, which have a wide dispersion pattern, I'd try for wider placement.
