Denon AVR-3801: The Deal As It Stands Now.gladtrix

I've looked at and listened to the Denon AVR-3801 Demo/Display model at a local chain retailer. It appears to be in good, but not excellent condition. They said it has a 1 Year Labor, 90 Day Parts warranty (Is this the norm?). The final negotiated price was $658.00.

The local high-end non-chain retailer (where I intend to purchase my speakers) is selling a brand new Denon AVR-3801 for $900 with full warranty. Also, this retailer has a 3 year, full-price upgrade program, which the chain retailer does not. So, if I purchase the Denon here, I can later upgrade to new equipment in a year or two. Maybe even get separates. This sounds like a great idea, since I intend to upgrade when more money is available! Plus, this future-proofs the technology. Also, instead of the AVR-3801, since I can always upgrade later, I could just purchase a lower Denon model for around $400 to $500, and upgrade later.

To be honest, all these factors have left me confused and frustrated. Based on the sum of your experiences, what is your opinion?

The dealer is bullshitting about the warranty. He is just trying to sell you an extended warranty. Also, the other deal where you get to exchange your gear sounds much better. If I were you, I'd wait for the 2802 and try it out. It looks like a pretty good receiver with a horde of features. Go with the upgrade option IMHO.

Good advice I wouldn't pay more than 550.00 including tax for the 3801 floor model. Hold out for the 2802.

I agree, this sounds like a scam. The price is not all that great for an open box closeout model, and a 90-day warranty on parts?! If you have a dealer that offers the upgrade option, I would take it. The AVR-2801 is a fine receiver in its own right, and if you can't afford the 3801 with acceptable terms, then don't buy it right now. High end retailers that offer the trade-in upgrade are trying to retain you as a long-term customer. Two of the dealers that I recently bought equipment from do this, and allow you to apply the purchase price towards any combination of components within one year. Plus, they service what they sell. That other store sounds like it's just trying to make a quick sale and clear some shelf space for a 3802.

I just replied to your original post.
The new 3802 is less then 800 ( 6th ave electronics and crazy eddit and...) so whay you want to pay 900 for 3801? The brand new 3801 is on sale for 695. See the link.

some of Yahoo's online shopping sites are unauthorized sources, which means you lose the factory warranty if you buy from them. Get the price quotes from these sources and order from a legit dealer. I know that if you call the toll-free number at Good Guys' web site, they will match reasonable internet price quotes, and they are an authorized dealer.

6th Avenue is an authorized dealer for Denon - check the Denon web site.

and Denon's warranty is 2 years, not one year. And it covers both parts and labor I think, but not sure.

Go back and kick him in the junk, he's committing fraud. You can't get him in court, so kick his junk. Works for me.
