| pro-logic receiver and dvd | Side_Show_Bob Aug 14, 2001 11:09 PM | | Hi, I have an old technics sa-ex500 dolby pro-logic receiver.
Is it possible to connect this to a dvd player that has dolby digital circuitry to achieve digital surround sound?
Thanks,
Andy. |
| Not true DD, but true four channels. | Smokey Aug 15, 2001 2:40 AM | | HI Bob
You will not be able to take advantages of DD recording with your Pro Logic receiver. Even if the DVD player has built in DD/DTS decoder, the only way you can enjoy full effect of DD/DTS is that your Receiver have to have 6 discrete RCA analog input ( DD/DTS Ready).
But all is not lost. DVD players by default ( only when in DD mode and not DTS ) will output Dolby Surround ( Center and rear channel piggybacking on L&R channels ) from it two regular RCA analog output ( Right and Left).
If you connect these two analog outputs from your DVD player to your Pro Logic Receiver, then you will have true four channel surround ( R, L, C, Mono Rear ) that are discrete and true Souround--not matrixes by Receiver DSP.
I hope that help the matter than confused it. |
| Don't Confuse DD and DPL | Kev Aug 15, 2001 6:52 AM | | What Smokey has described is dolby pro logic where the center and surrounds signals are burried (for lack of better terminology) in the left and right outputs and decoded by the receiver. In short there are only two ways to have dolby digital (DD). The first is to have a DD receiver and connect the DVD to the receiver via a digital connection (tosslink or coax). The second is if your receiver is described as dolby digital ready, i.e. it has a set of 5.1 (left, right, center, l/r surrounds and the .1 LFE)inputs on the back side which are connected to the same 5.1 outputs on the dvd player if not you are stuck with just dolby pro logic. |

You can use the discrete outputs of your dvd (provided your dvd has a dd/dts decoder on board) hook que main channels to your DPL receiver and the other channels to two separate amps(old stereo receiver or amp).
Bottom line, if you can not get a new receiver today, I would just try to get a couple of amps or old receiver at any yard sale. |
