Make certain that you've enabled the digital decoding on the DVD player. There is normally a menu setting for Dolby Digital and DTS outputs. Make certain you are using the digital input on the receiver. I'm not familiar with the Kenwood, but most receivers allow you to select the analog or digital inputs for the DVD player input selection. Finally, make certain the receiver's setting is approproriate for DD or DTS decoding. Some receivers have automatic format detection, while others require you to set the receiver to decode a specific format. Good luck.
