2k for HTpaulbl
Oct 5, 2001 11:18 AM
OK guys:

Buddy of mine here at work has 2k (approx.) for receiver and speakers (plus sub). Recommendations? I've got him interested in the Denon 2802, and suggested that Onkyo and Yamaha are worth checking out as well. He's not interested in online retailers, so recommendations you make need to be available at B&M stores. I'm thinking the 2802 and Energy/Mirage/Paradigm, or Klipsch, or perhaps B&W. Thoughts? Thanks!

Will the Klipsch speakers fit under budget? I'm not familiar with their prices. Also, since the SVS is internet only, I don't think he'll bite, though I may have to invite him over to my place to check out my Rava sub. Thanks for the suggestions!

The Klipsch speakers when bought as a package can usually be bought for 1050 shipped from most online places. Too bad about the SVS. The Rava is great as well as is the Velo CT 150.

Tweeter will match on the Klipsch side. Tweeter is Brick and Mortar.

To get into yet another pointless conversation with you.

Avoid even engaging in the discussion. Greg wants to argue with you, and nick. That is all he wants to do, no matter how much sense your posts make. Even if you are 250 million percent correct, he will argue. It doesn't even matter if 100 people tell him you are correct, he still will argue you down. If I had an opinion different from yours, I just state my opinion. There is no need to down, or minimize yours just to get mine heard. And of course if I did disagree, I would come with FACTS that support my opinion. Not just a bunch of words that serve no purpose. And I certainly would register my self, and not just be a faceless lobber of opposite opinions.

Greg has a proven history of argueing with you and Nick. He kinda reminds me of the dot guy. Annoying

Let me clarify my earlier post. Tweeter has on a few reported cases matched the Klipsch Reference package for the 1000-1100 I initially quoted. I have spoken on numerous occasions with the Tweeter out here in Naperville IL and they have no problems matching that price.

The Denon 2802 is certainly an attractive receiver and would definitely reccomend it.

As for the sub, if he won;t consider SVS, I would have to say that either the Velo CT-150 or the Sunfire JR might be nice. I have seen the Sunfire JR at Ultimate elctronics for an even 600.00. I'm not sure what you are seeing for retail prices on the 2802.

If for some strange reason the Reference line can't be had for less than 1100 from a local retailer. The SF line is also nice (SF2, SS5, and SC5 I believe).

Another approach is to go with a higher quality set of mains and add the other speakers incrementally, especially if he has an older set of speakers that can temporarily do surround duty. That extra budget opens up a lot of choices on the mains, which he should not compromise on if he plans to listen to a lot of two-channel music.

Paradigm's a good choice in that price range, and with the leftover budget after getting the 2802, it is possible to piece together almost a complete Monitor series package within that budget (might be short for the sub). But, I personally prefer the Reference Studio series, more accurate midrange and better overall tonal balance. And with that series he can start with the mains and the center speaker, and add the remainder later.

As for other choices, the Energy models are also very nice. In fact, they were among the few sub-$1,000 floorstanding models I auditioned that did not have significant bass resonance.

If the budget is fixed and your friend wants to buy the whole thing at the same time, I would opt for the B&W 600S2 series over the Paradigm Monitor series. Using the DM602s as the mains, he might also be a tad short for the sub if he opts for the matching center and surround speakers. But, again if he listens to a lot of two-channel stereo, the DM602s are the best overall speakers I heard in that price range. It may lack the punch of some more aggressive sounding speakers, but for tonal balance and accuracy, they're hard to beat for the price.

Also, in the next few months, you might find some bargains on the 600S2 line up since B&W is about to discontinue that series and replace it with the 600S3 series (which are already available in Europe), which borrows some of the features that B&W introduced in the CM series.
Thank you all for your responses, much appreciated! (nt)paulbl
