Sony KDP65XBR2 + DVD PlayerBig Ben
Oct 6, 2001 10:15 PM
I have just installed a new Sony KDP65XBR2 HDTV in my Home Theatre room and I am noticing a lot of jagged edges on my DVD movies. Is this because I am not using a progressive scan DVD player. At present I am using a Sony DVPS-330. I know this is a low end player.

I have tried the Interlaced, Progressive and CineMotion modes and it does not make a difference.

I was thinking of upgrading to a Sony ES9000 DVD player, would this fix my problem.

I am also noticing how bad the video quality is on some of these DVD movies. The 65" XBR2 really picks up everything.

Any info on this would be much appreciated as I want to take full advantage of the expensive HDTV.

Hi Ben

According to your TV specification, your TV's CineMotion mode utilizes 3:2 pull down to convert 480i to 480p which what basically progressive scan DVD player does.
My guess is that your DVD player might be suffering from Chroma bug which are cause of jagget edges/colors. I would try a non-chroma bug DVD player such as Panasonic RV-31 ($179). Engage Cinemode and disable Digital Reality Creation (480i to 1080i) to see if you notice improvement in picture quality.

Good luck.

Big Ben,

The chroma bug that Smokey mentions is a flaw with some progressive scan players and is more related to colors not displaying properly. I doubt your Sony interlaced player has this problem. The jaggies you are seeing are more likely due to the line doubler in your TV. An upgrade to a progressive scan player would almost certainly help with the problem you are having with jaggies. Even though your TV has a line doubler with 3-2 pull down, a progressive scan DVD player's line doubler will almost always out-perform a TV's.

I'm sure the Sony ES player would do fine, though you don't necessarily need to invest that much. There are a lot of progressive scan players from JVC, Panasonic, and also Sony in the $350 range that are getting good reviews. Of course make sure you demo them at the store before purchasing, preferably on the same model TV you own if possible.

Good Luck

Hi DR

Chroma bug is not product of progressive scan DVD player as some of non-progressive scan DVD player also have it. It is well documented that most of Sony DVD player have Chroma bug (even their higher end model).
But you also have point out that the jagged edged might be due to internal line doubler ( 480i to 1080i). So maybe another run down of adjustments and connection might be in order to find out which connection will result in better picture and post again and we go from there.

Hi Smokey,

I did install a new Sony DVPS9000ES and still see some jagged edges.

On Gladiator, scene 17 when the women walks in, you can see these on her right shoulder.

Do you see this?

Ben
