Tough surround placement scenarioMikeO

Hello, I've got a small home theater area and a difficult decision to make regarding surround placement. My couch is against the back wall and I can't use side walls. My only option is to place the surrounds about 3' to either side of couch and only about 1' higher than the listening position. Will this suffice? I've also read on the dolby site that an option is to place the surrounds on the floor facing up -has anyone tried this.

Thanks

Mike,

I just placed my surrounds on the ground behind my couch last week. THe speakers fire up to the ceiling.

The sound is great! Shouldn't be a problem for you unless you have a very tall ceiling.

Bonus points from my wife who likes the speakers hidden.
I figure I can now add a rear center channel back there which would also be hidden from my wifes view.

Give it a try... and remember to adjust the level of output for your rears....they will have to be increased to compensate the position behind the couch.
I used the Radio Shack Sound meter. Its the way to go.

good luck.

yeah I was hooking up and friends system and for the moment we couldn't mount the surrounds so they were at the sides of his listening position. They sounded bad faced inwards so I turned them around facing rearwards and the sound literally sounded as if it was behind me. He decided not to even mount them in the walls now. All i could say is everyones listening room is different with all different variables, so just move them around , and don't matter if it doesn't look like the showroom as long as the sound is doing what is supposed to do thats all that matters. Until we all have our own HT built rooms for our speaker systems we will have to submit to these little tests and odd ball speaker placement ventures.
