| Dolby Digital Decoder..or DTS? | Hornet Nov 30, 2001 7:38 AM | | I am looking for a DVD with among other things a dolby digital decoder.. Is DTS the same thing..can someone explain this to me, a novice looking for a good DVD multi-disk player. I hear that Toshiba is good..others? |
| not the same | Old_lane Nov 30, 2001 10:15 AM | | From what I hear and I'm not any kind of authority on this. Terrence seems to be the man to ask but you might not understand his reply (might be a bit technical...he's always correcting me that SOB) hehehe just kidding thunderstorm (I mean terrence, I appreciate all the clear ups) DTS and DD are different formats and not compatible so you need both. That shouldn't be a real problem though cause it seems like it's the standard that if it has one it will have both. DTS is not as compressed and seems to be the better format. DD is probably more widely used. Remember to connect all the outputs on the back of the DVD player (the ones labelled center, right, left, surround etc.) they look like RCA or composite input/output to a receiver that is DD ready. You can't just hook it up to any old receiver. |
| additionally..... | Scott2k Nov 30, 2001 3:54 PM | | I didn't wan't old_lane to get mad at the correction, but your DD/DTS DVD player won't have center, l,r, surround speaker outs. To utilize the DD/DTS sound, you'll need to hook up either the composite or optical (if it has it) digital audio outputs. Hook up the Video Out (usually by component video) directly to the TV and the Audio Out to your receiver "DVD Audio IN". You'll see varying opinions regarding Optical vs. composite hookups, you decide, both are comparable. You may not have enough video inputs on your tv to go direct from the dvd, so you'll need a receiver with video switching capabilities. |
| one last thing... | Scott2k Nov 30, 2001 3:59 PM | | you may read it below, but I just picked up the Toshiba sd-2705 for $188 at Best buy. 5 disc, DVD/CD/CD-r, DTS/DD, etc. Couldn't be happier. It's my second Toshiba DVD player and in my opinion, you can't get more bang for your buck. |
| one last thing... | Hornet Nov 30, 2001 8:38 PM | | Hey scott and old_lane.. I think with the help of you guys and my little nephew I am starting to understand these things..a bit.
I am looking at the Toshiba sd3755 for about $250 ..it however does not have ddd but does have the DTS. I don't think I need the DDD do I, if when it comes time to upgrade my receiver that WILL have DDD..am I correct on this? and will it be able to play full Dolby Digital then?.. and do I need specific surround sound speakers?
I am looking at some of the KLH line of speakers, particularly the HTA-9006.
Let me know what you think will you guys? |
| hold on a min | Old_lane Dec 1, 2001 6:50 AM | | WAIT, the sd3755 (I just looked it up) Doesn't have onboard DD or DTS decoders your receiver needs to have the decoder and then you can send out the signal via optical or coaxial. |
| I don't think I'm wrong on this | Old_lane Dec 1, 2001 7:01 AM | | Well hornet, Does your receiver have a DD and DTS decoder or not. The SD 2705 also doesn't have the onboard decoder meaning that you need a receiver with the decoder. If you are using a DVD player with an on board decoder and your receiver doesn't have the decoder you can't use the optical or coaxial output. Here's what's going on in a nutshell. Okay so the DVD player is reading the disc and doing the decoding for DD or DTS (assuming your receiver doesn't have the decoder)now it decodes the signals for each of the discrete channels and sends them out through the 6 different audio outputs (r/l/center/surround/sub) these go through the receiver where they are amplified and sent to the speakers. Now, if your receiver can do the decoding the bitstream (signal) is sent straight from the DVD player to the reeiver ehere the decoders in the receiver splits the audio information in order to route it to the proper speaker. Again if your DVD player is doing the decoding you must have the 5.1 output on the DVD player, a receiver that accepts 5.1 input (DD ready)and 6 cables. and scott I never get mad at people who correct me as long as they're not jerks about it so thanks for the try but I think that I'm right on this one. |
| I don't think I'm wrong on this | Hornet Dec 4, 2001 9:09 PM | | Ok old_lane... My old receiver is about 10 years old, no Dolby or anything. I want to get the DVD player first..then the speakers and receiver togather. If the receiver has DDD and or DTS and the sd3755 does not will it still play true dolby surround sound when I get enough money to buy the new receiver and speakers?
Also, do I need specific surround sound speakers? I am looking at the KLH HTA 9005 or 9006 I know the 9006 has the poweres sub..do I need that powered sub also to get true suuround sound?
I hope I have made a decent statement of what I intend to do..get the DVD first...then, when money permits, then get the speakers and the receiver..bye the way I am looking at the Technics receiver..model number..I think is SAX 1050?..or something like that and it definetely DOES have the DDD! IS that all that is needed to ge the surround sound? or do I need a DVD player with it (DDD) in it also?
