New receiver? Any suggestions?crashgrover
Jan 10, 2002 7:17 AM
I'm looking to get a new receiver since I just sold my Denon 1801. Its not that I was unhappy with the Denon, but I want to get into a receiver that is going to last me a long time, and be versatile in a lot of systems. As of right now, this is my system:
Polk RT1000's fronts
Polk FX300's rears
Polk CS245 center
No receiver- just sold
Panasonic RV31 dvd player
Marantz CC3000 cdplayer
Denon TT
I've been looking at 3 receivers in particular- the Pioneer Elite RV39 for $1000, the Marantz SR7200 for $700, and the Marantz SR19 for $1200. My budget stops at $1200. I'm looking for a good 5-channel receiver, indivdual amps per channel, thats going to power my speakers for a long time to come- my 5 year goal is to get Martin Logans. I'm a Marantz man first, the Pioneer is tempting... but I wonder about the quality of it compared to Marantz. I'm too used to cheaper receivers like Onkyo and Harmon Kardon so I don't have a very good feel for the high-end market yet. In a few months I'm going be upgrading to B&W 602 or 603's, with a Sunfire True Sub Jr. I've always used this site, and in particular this board to make decisions on audio equipment and have never regretted a purchase. Any help that you could give me would be appreciated! Thanks!
Out of the 3 you listAD

Definitely the SR-19. Read the reviews on this site. I bought the SR-7000 (the one before the SR-7200) and I couldnt be happier with it, but if I could have I would have definitely bought the SR-19.

in order to power martin logans you are going to need some serious power. I would say the only receiver up to that task is the Carver C1000. IT is a most impressive 5-channel receiver, that boasts a 200W RMS X 5 channels. It is definitely a beast. Check it out here:

you might be hard pressed to find it though. It sells for about 1300 or so, but they can be had used for 1000. If you are familiar with sunfire then I am sure you are familiar with Bob Carver and how impressive his designs usually are,

I've been looking at the Carver as well, the reason that it didn't make my short list was because I wasn't sure that it was an all in one receiver. Is it an all-in receiver, with no need for an amp or preamp? Any links to reviews or information would be really helpful- thanks

that is correct it is a receiver it is not seperates like the sunfire brand. a search on google.com should yield reviews.

You consider the onkyo and HK to be cheap receivers and the pioneer elite and the marantz to be high end? I'd consider Denon, Onkyo, Marantz, HK, Yamaha, and pioneer elite all to be in the same catagory (whether this means high end to you or not is subjective).I'd go with a Denon and Onkyo way before I'd go with a similarly priced Elite. For the speakers though you should just make sure your receiver can accomadate amps then when you're ready to move up to the martins you'll want to get a quality amp. Going the separates route is good for upgrading as the amps can just be connected to a preamp with all the new formats that will be coming in the future.

I guess I should clarify a little- I've owned the lower-end HK and Onkyo receivers. I had an AVR110, two defective models, and an Onkyo TXDS595, also defective. Its not that I didn't like my Denon, its just that I liked the Marantz more. As for the speakers... looking at an interem set before the Martins, what do you reccomend?

I agree with Old_Lane about high end and low end receiver theory. Pioneer Elite rate their receivers at 6 Ohms I believe and I have never liked them for soe or the other reason. The Marantz receivers you mentioned are definitely very good recievers.
I own the Onkyo 898 and a couple of days ago, I ran it up against the 3802 just to have some fun and IMHO, the Onkyo came out way ahead. The Onkyo has enough juice to power many power hungry speakers.
However, buying a receiver is very difficult when you move away from somethng you like. In my case I was a Denon fan and had a hard time moving over to Onkyo. However, I did a lot of in house testing and then made up my mind.
If you like the Marantz receivers, then go to your dealer and push them to their limits and see how they sound. If he has a generous return/exchange policy then make use of it and try it out in your own home, there is no substitute for that. The higher end Marantz are very good receivers and I would pick them over the Elite any given day.

I just upgraded to what you are considering a few months back. I had the same problems you are having when choosing a reciever.

I originally thought i would have to get a denon 4800 to power the logans. after taking it home i found that it wasnt close to enough power for the MLs. after that i realized that besides the power upgrade the 4800 was not much better than the 3801 which (at teh time) was under half the price. I ended up getting a 3801 which is a great recever and a b&k 1400 series 2 amp. the total was around 1000$ the amp powers the logans wonderfully. and at 350$ used off audiogon it was a steal. especally considering the 4800 that i was going to get orriginally was 1500$

when you get down to it your not going to find a all-in-one that will power a ML, let alone for under 1k. And to find a HT reciever that will last several yrs is impossible. No matter what one you buy it will be obsolete before you unbox it.

In conclusion, get either a preamp + 5 channel amp or a 2ch amp and a all inone that can power the surrounds and center and let the amp take care of the logans.

Martin logans are NOT something you want to underpower. with proper juice they are absolutly spectacular
