|  Because they use double DACs. | Smokey Jan 10, 2002 12:18 PM | | Stand alone TiV uses two extra DACs (Analog to Digital converter and then Digital to analog converter) to store a signal. But for satellites, TiVo record signal digitally as it is streaming down the dish, and then feed it digitally to Mpeg decoder. So two DACs can be eliminated this way and I guess that is why stand alone TiVo are more expensive than satellites TiVo.
