| DVD Players | stloldhead Jan 11, 2002 7:08 AM | | I put in an order with J&R for an Onkyo TX-DS696 receiver & an Onkyo DV-C601 DVD player. I then found a newer model unit for DVD, the Onkyo DV-C503 which plays CDR-RW & MP3s among some other added features. I did a review search on the player (Fall 2001 product), and I found there are no reviews yet. When I checked the review for my first choice, the Onkyo DV-C601, I realized I had never checked the review. I guess it's a piece of crap to put it mildly! Should I consider the newer model Onkyo DV-C503, or are all Onkyo DVD Players crap? I'm very hesitant about my DVD purchase, since it will be my first & I want it to be my only for the next year or so. Are there other brands in the $300 range I should consider instead? I was wanting to stick to the same brand, but I also have a Sony SLV-798HF VCR (had for 1 1/2 years with no problems), and a Wega TV, so Sony would be a good fit as well (other brands are not ruled out). I'm looking for input on the DVD player, but I'd also welcome input about the Onkyo TX-DS696 receiver (hasn't been shipped yet) if it is a piece of crap, also... |
| re: DVD Players | stloldhead Jan 11, 2002 1:34 PM | | Thanks everyone. I looked at the Pioneer DV-440 & Panasonic DVD-RV31k, and I decided to go with the Panasonic. Now I'm going to be looking for a multi-disk CD player. The 'wants' never end... |
| I really like my new Sony DVP-NS500V!!! | Keith H Jan 11, 2002 2:02 PM | | Even though most people on this site hate everything with the sony name on it.I have a first generation Sony DVD player that's going on 6years old that my kids use and it still works fine.SONY=BOSE here i guess.Maybe i am one of the few who have had good luck with Sony,i have never had anything sony screw up on me yet(Knock on wood).I have a sony clock radio thats 22years old and still going strong!OK i'll shut up now i'm sorry for ranting...BYE BYE and PEACE! |
| re: DVD Players | Coup Jan 11, 2002 9:40 AM | | I would reccommend as my first choice Sony or Panasonic. Read the reviews of their top rated models as to avoid the models with problems. My second choice would be Toshiba or Pioneer. I've owned or used all of these with the exception of the Toshiba, and am going by reputation only. The players to avoid in my opinion, are the players from Denon, Onyko, Marantz and Yamaha. These are all overpriced and to my mind, unreliable. Also speaking from non-experience, I would avoid the inexpensive consumer brands such as Apex,GE, RCA, Phillips etc.I'm sure some people are using these non-recommended players to great satisfaction, but you asked for an opinion and this is mine. |
| Buy a yamaha and get a panasonic with the yamaha name on it. | Keith H Jan 11, 2002 1:52 PM | | Why spend $400.00 on a yamaha unit when you can buy a Panasonic for half the cost, and the insides of the yamaha are made by panasonic anyway.Do some research and you will find out that alot of the higher end brands use guts that are made by manufactures like Panasonic,Sony, pioneer ect,you would be surprised. |
| I know Denon uses Panasonic transports... | Woochifer Jan 11, 2002 5:13 PM | | not sure about Yamaha. Actually, in the case of Denon only their lower end units have Panasonic parts inside. But, even those Denon models that use Panasonic transports still have other circuitry that you don't typically find in Panasonic models (eg: higher quality DACs); and almost all DVD player manufacturers use third party suppliers for some major components, especially with the processors. |
| before adam gets a chance... | Old_lane Jan 11, 2002 9:49 AM | | Also look at the JVC XV-S40BK . The Sony has the chroma bug and while it's not a major thing and some people might not notice it why get that player when you can get a cheaper JVC or panasonic (try the RV31) without it....haha beat ya to it adam |
| re: DVD Players | JJ Jan 11, 2002 12:40 PM | | While most people like the Toshiba models, I have not had much luck. I bought the 3109 model a few years ago and it worked fine, but then started to lock up on some discs and not recognize others. I then bought a Pioneer Elite DV-C36 5 disc changer that has worked great. I paid about $425 for it.
A few weeks ago I thought about upgrading my DVD player to true progressive scan, since I have a HDTV. I bought the Toshiba 4700 and it worked great the first day. The next day I put in 2 BRAND NEW dvd's that had not even been opened, and it froze up on one and wouldn't even play the other. I then put both in the Pioneer and they played GREAT! It may just be my luck with Toshiba, but they are done with me for sometime.
If you are looking at low-priced units, I think the Panansonic seems to be good. I am now trying a Philips that has a great picture, model number is something like XXXX50AT. The remote and on-screen menu are not that great, but the video processor is made by Sage/Farouda, which is an EXTREMELY high-end video company. I also think the Pioneers are good, maybe the 444 model. You could also try JVC. I have had great luck with Pioneer units, but everyone doesn't share that some thought. |
