Upgrade main speakers or buy a sub.jasonwbayou@yahoo.com

Hi,

I am currently running a pair of PSB stratus Silver i's for mains with a C5 center and a pair of surrounds (they are a pair of boston acoustic bookshelf speakers but I dont remember the model) as well as a Klipsch ksw-12 sub. I am amping the mains using a denon AVR 4800 as a pre and B&K ref 4220 amp as a pro. Clearly, my sub is a weak link in the system, in my opinion. I am either going to upgrade my main speakers to a pair of PSB stratus GOld i's or upgrade my sub to a HVS 16-46CS or CS-ultra. My tastes are approximately 50/50 HT/Music. Which would be the more worthwhile upgrade, the sub or the mains?

Thanks very much for the adivce,
Jason

The Klipsch ksw-12 is a joke. A lot of good but unknowing people have fallen for these speakers. They were tested in Home Theater Magazine as part of a Klipsch system and found to only go down to 48hz!!!!!
the cabinet is cheap joke too. Your main speakers are very good speakers for music and home theater. Stereophile tested them in 7-94 compared to my Snell Type D speakers. Kevin Voecks of Revel speakers designed the Type D speakers while he was the designer at Snell. They were close. Junk the Klipsch(sell it) and spend the $$$ on a real sub. I bought the Carver True Subwoofer Mark II when it came out because of the wife factor. The 16-46CS is featured in the lasted issue of Sensible Sound magazine and they liked it. Just remember, it will excite the room at one or two places(like at 40hz and 75hz) and there will not be much you can do about it other than move it around. The $3,000 Revel Sub($2,200 used) has a parametric equilizer that works at three frequencies and is really what you would want to buy if the price was the same as the 16-46. Infinity makes a sub with a parametric equilizer for one frequencie called the IL120. Stereophile Guide to Home Theater magazine chose it as the best sub under a grand because of the parametic equilizer. It hasn't caught on and can be bought very cheap, less than $500. With two of these, 25hz should be possible and you can get rid of the bass hump that your room will have with the 16-46(or any other sub without the equilizer). JMO
