are there less expensive options to calibrating speakers...briney

I know that Avia and Video Essentials are availible to buy, but I really just want to set up my speakers with an SPL meter and some basic test tones to cover the subwoofer and other speakers. I do not need to adjust color settings, etc.
What options are there for me ?

You can buy the VE for about $21 delivered. Also, try your Receiver test tones and that should help you in setting/calibrating your speakers. Now I know many purists will prefer some other source for "test-tones" but in the absence of anything else, your receiver's internal test-tones should be OK. Beats calibrating by ears.
Some places rent the AVIA and VE...Josh Studrawa

I rented mine for $1.99 for 5 days in Atlanta. Call around to non-Blockbuster video places.
