| Suggestions....? | Joder69 Oct 5, 2001 8:46 AM | | i am looking to upgrade my home theater set up and was just looking for some suggestions/recommendations...
first, as far as recievers go, im looking to spend around 1200 or less and i would be using it almost strictly (a good 98%) for DVDs. Ive heard onkyo, denon and yamaha are all good. which models would i be looking at or others should i take a look at? can anyone offer me their personal preference?
second, for speakers, im trying to decide between powered towers for mains, or non powered and using a seperate sub. what are the advantages to both? ive heard definitive technology makes good powered speakers, i also like klipsch for non powered... any suggestions/recommendations?
i appreciate all input
thanks |

Denon 3802: DD/DTS, DD-EX/DTS-ES(Discrete),DPL-II,DTS-Neo,110W X 7.
Onkyo 787: Same features as 3802 except only 6 powered channels(THX)
Speakers:
Mains-RF3s
Surrounds-RS3s
Center-RC3
Sub: The sentimental favorite seems to be SVS, but also look into Adire Audio. |

But for me, the Klipsch are too high. For DVDs and TV, I prefer more midrange and less highs, such as (drum roll please)...Mirage :)
FRx series (7 or 9) should work nice. SVS subs rock too. |

| re: Suggestions....? | El Gato Gordo Oct 5, 2001 12:55 PM | | Receivers: I did a big receiver hunt 3 years ago, and have assisted 2 of my friends very recently. However, my system is 80/20 music/movies. . . so, my priorities on amps were: Denon, Onkyo, Yamaha. Yamaha has superior steering of the formats- it's "Speaker play" is excellent. However, Onkyo and Denon had slightly warmer presentations of sounds, and the Denon's was downright rich and almost chocolate-like in the bass. I went with the Denon, however, if you can, see what's honestly going to sound best in your room. Also, don't rule out Harmon Kardon (however, I found these really need to be paired with the right speakers). If you're doing movies, I'd still reccommend 5-7 matched speakers and 1, preferably, 2, subs. The problem is, most rooms won't handle the standing waves that power towers and poorly placed subs produce. With satellites and subs, you have more lattitude in moving the sounds around to get the kind of bass you want. HSU research makes a sub for $500 that is truly a great hidden gem, and for speakers, I'd go for B&W's, if not those, perhaps Def-Techs, Klipsch, or NHT- let your ears (and a reasonable wallet-sene) be your guide! While I haven't used the site, www.world-exchange.com appears to have good prices on popular receivers. . . |

I would definitely go with a separate subwoofer than mains with built-in sub. Unless you have budgeted over $2k for speakers, I would recommend speaker package/system for HT only. Take a look at the Energy Encore or the Polk 7500. Try to get a good subwoofer to match them as the subwoofer is a main part to your speaker system.
good luck... |
