I have a smallish rectangular room that I want to place the sweet spot couch against the rear wall. Can I place the rear surround speakers on that wall. The side walls are out of the question (window's in the way). Actually, I think fortunately, as the rear wall goes up, it starts to slant in at a 45 degree angle near the ceiling. Could I put the speakers up there pointing downish. How high is too high for rear speakers on the back wall?
Back wall is bad for surrounds.....Terrence

David,
Of all the locations that a surround speaker could be, the rear is the worst. From that location, it places the rear speakers too far from the front speakers to hold the surroundfield together. You are likely to hear a gap in the soundfield as sounds are panned from front to back. Also getting imaging in the surrounds will be tough because of reflections from our pinna(flap of ears).

I would recommend that you go to WWW.dolby.com, and check out their placement recommendations. They have several different ones that might work for you. Rear wall=bad surround imaging, and unnatural surroundfield.

I originally thought I was going to mount my rears on a wall too but gave up and went to Radio Shack and paid $50 for two pretty nice stands. They are great because you can move them around to check out the best sound field. You can even put them in front of a window if necessary.
