| Adam, any X box info? | beerme1 Oct 4, 2001 7:46 PM | | I know your previous trip was cancelled, but have you been out west at all? Or have you gotten any advance units in the Chicagoland area? I am really interested in your thoughts on this unit. I am pretty gung ho for it, but at the same time wonder how the Gamcube will compare. What are your thoughts on that unit also if you don't mind. Take care |
| Funny You Should Ask | Adam Oct 4, 2001 9:20 PM | | I was at a Chicago Game Cube exhibition with Starcom IP (media planning and buying agency) this past tues and Wed. I'll be in seattle next Thursday to look over interactive advertising oppurtunities with the X-box and of course to pick up my opy of windows XP for 40.00 or so at the Microsoft store. I promise to have full report of both next friday...sorry for the delay, but the Sony DA55ES is taking up my time right now :) |
| Funny You Should Ask | beerme1 Oct 4, 2001 9:31 PM | | Enjoy the Sony while you have it, or might you be considering a change if you like it that much? I will keep you (this time) to your promise of a review next friday. Thanks |
| X-Box? pffft! | Dolby Oct 5, 2001 4:25 AM | | I know this isn't a gaming forum, but I'd like to have my little say ;) The Sony is always going to be around and, in my opinion, continue growing tremendously. Even if the X-Box is slightly better it's entering the market too late, and Sony already have themselves firmly established - in fact, they have something similar to a cult following! Establishment is a great assett to 'have'.
Besides, can you imagine a Microsoft based gaming console? If it works similar to their OS they'll be freezing frequently, not recognise controls, games that are supposed to be compatible wouldn't be compatiable, blue screen of death errors ... Basically, Sony rules the roost and will continue to do so for many, many years ;) |
| i wouldn't exactly write Microsoft off | Adam Oct 5, 2001 6:27 AM | | Considering who they have partnered with for hardware as well as the fact that they truly have taken a look into cutting the cost of games by allowing users to simply donwload them to the x-box hard drive and "test" them out. It would certainly make trying out games a much easier solution, you could conceivablt "test" out 10 games for 50.00 then if you decide to buy one, no problem pay away and keep it on the drive or simply roll the cash already spent into your local video game retailer. |
| True, but ... | Dolby Oct 5, 2001 7:26 AM | | I'm not writing them off, I just think they have a really tough act to follow with the PS1 and PS2. Having an established market and infrastructure is a huuuuge advantage to Sony, and I think that Microsoft will have to work extra hard to penetrate the market. As I said earlier, I still think that Sony will be leading the game console market in 5 years ;) |
| | Willy Oct 5, 2001 7:43 AM | | There are a lot of people who play computer games currently and I think the X-Box will really apeal to people who like simulation, real time strategy, rpg type games. Presently I'm not all that impressed with the PS2 plus what is their problem? power on/off switch should be on the FRONT of a video game console who's the idiot that decided "well, we should probably make it really annoying for people to turn the unit on and off. This isn't really an annoyance if you have it out in the open, but I like to have all my gear in a rack. I really don't think the X-Box will freeze up and be all buggy like their OS. An OS and a game console aren't really comparable. Os is software, game consoles are hardware. Anyways I think that the X-Box will do just fine because if there's one thing that microsoft does well it's marketing. I'm not a big fan of the X-Box and I think I'll be getting a game cube despite the disapointment of the N64. Plus I think that the X-Box and Game Cube will be HD compatible so they have a slight advantage there over the PS2, |
| X-Box? pffft! | Willy Oct 5, 2001 7:47 AM | | Too late? So you mean that the only game consoles that should ever be out must be Nintendo, Sega, and PS. On this rationale when the first PS came out it was entering the market "too late" as nintendo and Sega were well established at that time. If you are talking about spec wise it is similar (actually probably a little more powerful) when compared with the Game Cube and both are coming out around the same time. |
| All About The Games | Adam Oct 5, 2001 7:50 AM | | Where Nintendo has continued to be smart is there realization that a great console with piss poor games is bad. Games like Zelda, Goldeneye, Tony Hawk, Paper Mario kept the N64 alive, heck I still have mine, albeit just Zelda and Goldeneye. I have great expectations for the Game Cube especially for the next Zelda. X-box certainly has a tough market to break into, but my guess is that so long as the game support is there they will have no problems gaining market share. |
| All About The Games | beerme1 Oct 5, 2001 8:26 AM | | I am concerned that the Nintendo will be geared to kids and their Pokemon games. Sorry but that just doesn't work for me. I believe the X Box so far appears to have games that are directed for adult children like me :) I am not saying that the Game Cube wont work. Actually I'm somewhat stuck on this issue, as I might consider the GC and look forward to actual reviews and gameplay etc. I want to settle down with one console for a while and despite it all the Sony is not it for me. Soon grasshopper soon... |
| Establishment ... | Dolby Oct 5, 2001 10:15 AM | | "On this rationale when the first PS came out it was entering the market "too late" as nintendo and Sega were well established at that time" - Alright, I'm not sure of how things sold etc in the 1st world countries overseas, but here in South Africa when the PS was launched the two competitors that you mentioned had 8-bit and 16-bit consoles out - hardly any comparison really because the PS was aimed at a totally different market. To prove the 'establishment' theory, look at how 'amazing' Dreamcast stood up to the already established PS1.
It WAS faster and it DID have better grpahics, but it still couldn't topple the PS1 platform. This is exacly what I'm saying about the X-Box. I don't think it'll come close to PS2 (popularity, peripheral access, games access). It'll appear and live next to the PS2 ... second best of course.
What I did mean by 'too late' was establishment! The PS2 has already sold over 13 million units since it's launch last year, and I doubt the X-Box will get anywhere near that in 2 or even 3 years. |
| Interesting.... | paulbl Oct 5, 2001 8:26 AM | | I have yet to 'blue screen' a w2k or XP machine. I doubt X box will have problems like that. The only time I have trouble with the OS not recognizing devices is if the device drivers are VERY old, then you just download newer ones from the 'net. |
| re: Adam, any X box info? | Sunscat Oct 5, 2001 9:22 AM | | Working in the industry, I've had a chance to extensively look through all 3 systems. I could get into a pretty long post about the strengths and weaknessess of all 3 but I don't really have the time for that so i'll leave you with this.
Most Powerful hardware: Xbox
Best Software: PS2
Best combination of both: Gamecube
And for that reason i'll most likely be picking up a Gamecube when it's realeased. |

| re: Adam, any X box info? | jehremy Oct 7, 2001 8:51 AM | | PS2: best software? So far, I am very disappointed with software for the PS2 and I am disappointed in the system as a whole. Xbox has a bunch of games that look like they will be cool, and I was surprised how many games that are already in development for the system. Xbox will also be a progressive scan DVD player w/ 3:2 pulldown. Oh yeah, it is also broadband enabled right out of the box. I have a Dreamcast and playing football or basketball against people online, instead of the AI, is really cool. GC looks like a kiddie machine with kiddie games and unless they prove otherwise I will not be getting one. I do think that the GC will be successful, Nintendo's market is children and they do very well with it. I know that there will be exceptions to that, so no one needs to list the adult oriented games that are comming to the GC. For me, Xbox looks like the winner. If you have children GC may be the console for you. |
| re: Adam, any X box info? | GLWeeks Oct 8, 2001 8:07 AM | | XBox? Well, I'm already preordered so you probably know where I stand.... :) I just wanted to clear up something that was said since this is a HT forum... XBox has dropped the progressive scan DVD feature.... I believe it had something to do with licensing.... They hinted that they could enable the feature in the future... |
