ONKYO 787 FOR $599 -- worth it?GreyMark

Is this a good deal for the buck? Granted, no DTS-ES,or NEO, but I hear this is a proven receiver in HT, being THX select and all. Opinions welcome, but please let's avoid the whole "Denon v. Onkyo" debate. Gracias!

You get DD/DTS, THX-EX, DTS-ES Matrix, A damn good OSD, and a whole bunch of features for $599. What you are missing is DTS-ES Discrete and DPL-II/DTS-Neo.
On the other hand you might get your hands on the Denon 3801 which will give you everything but DPL-II for about under $700 if you are lucky enough in finding one.
The 787 is a very good receiver in it's own right and does have 6.1 capabilities and more. At $599, it is a great buy.

Greg, I agree with you but it's not a simple matter of people getting hung up on formats. If I had to buy a receiver today, I'd make sure that I buy one with all the standard formats. Most Yamahas, Denons, Onkyos, etc. in their $900-$1500 receivers offer every conceivable format. So, if I am spending that much money, why not get one with all the formats?
Can you or I guarantee which way the wind will blow with regards to the DVD manufacturers? IF more and more hardware comes out to decode DTS-ES matrix then yes, they will comply sooner or later.
I also believe that a receiver should at least have DPL-II or DTS-Neo if you do a lot of TV watching over cable or satellite. Those formats do bring 2 channel stereo broadcasts to life.
On the other hand if you can get your hands on a quality receiver for $599 like the above poster is then yes, it is a good buy. Now I don't know how many have sold their existing equipment to move up to these formats but given the nature of upgrading, I can bet a lot of guys have done it so far.
just my $.02.

Adam is someone who feels comfortable in telling his friends when to back off. I am sure you have friends who you may have offered advice, no matter how convoluted it is? Yeah, Adam was offereing me his advice!
The original poster not only asked if the 787 was a good buy at $599 but also specifically asked for opinions. Now I am going on a safe assumption that he, the original poster would not mind me telling him my opinion on the 787 but also tell him my opinion about other formats out there.
Now I simply don't know why you have to sound so arguementative or is it that you simply are not capable of having an open mind about things.
You Quoted:
"Well first of all the user just asked if this was a good buy and he knew what formats that it did not have and did not want to get into the Onkyo/Denon debate which you happened to bring into the equation with your response"
Did I? Where in my response did you find this? I was talking about Denon, Onkyo and Yamaha in one bracket and not singling out any one brand over another. Yes I did mention the 3801 only because some folks here on this forum have bought it as cheap as $650 and it does have more features than the 787. However, I did say that 787 was a good receiver and at $599 is a good buy.
So looks like I ruffled your feathers because I mentioned some other formats?
You also Quoted:
"I do not think that you need DPL II or Neo to enjoy TV as this is only your opinion and so be it. I watch a lot of TV and do not have DPLII or Neo and I am perfectly satisified with the sound I get"
Really? so we all should breath a collective sigh of relief that you at least have a receiver or else you would have simply said "I do not think that you need an external sound source to enjoy TV as this is only your opinion and so be it. I watch a lot of TV and do not have a receiver and I am perfectly satisified with the sound I get"
So it is OK for you to make your opinion strongly but god forbid the rest of us. And in your opinion DPL-II or DTS-Neo don't do anything to enhance the 2 channel stereo sound and that you don't need them?
Would you care to take a poll on this forum?
Greg, I do not reecive a royalty check from either DD or DTS for pushing either DD-EX or DTS-ES Discrete. I feel I should tell people about these formats as they truly enhance your viewing pleasure IMHO. If you don't like my opinion so be it.

I didn't realize that this post would have created such a spirited exchange. I'm impressed. Knowing that you have strong convictions is precisely why I came to this forum for your views. I thank you all very much, since you helped in the decision process.

True enough, J & R lists the Onkyo 787 on sale for $599. I have little patience for shipping/handling charges,et al., so I contacted onecall.com to see if they would match the price -- they did. Onecall is in Washington, J & R is in New York. I reside in Northern California (Go Raiders!!!), so my hope is that I will get the receiver sooner and at a cheaper shipping price with onecall. As it turns out, all of my criteria were satisfied.

I'm fully aware of the features of most of the HT receivers currently in the market. I own a Sony presently, and have auditioned Marantz, Yamaha and Denon (2802) at home for weeks at a time. Unfortunately, I was not able to listen to the 787, but I accept that it is of comparable standing with other receivers that I had auditioned. I was willing to acquire it at the right price, in spite of its sound format "deficiencies" (no DTS-ES, DPL II, etc.), hence my post. I simply needed reaffirmation that I was getting a good deal.

Thanks to your input, I am convinced that I am. Not only am I getting a THX receiver at roughly half the price, but I'm getting it from an authorized dealer with an excellent service reputation. The salesperson even offered that I can trade in the 787 for the 797/898 (sold to me at a discount) if I'm not happy with its performance. Incredible.

I realize that I might have been able to find the 3801 or similar receivers somewhere for around $700, but after weeks of searching the net, too many of those willing to part with the 3801 and 3802 in this price range were of the non-authorized variety. 6th Ave.Com wasn't willing to meet the Denon prices mentioned in other posts. They maintained that $999 was the lowest price that they would offer for the 3802, and again, the warranty was questionable being that the purchase would have been mail order. They purportedly were out of stock on the 3801.

All in all, I'm a happy customer, looking forward to a new toy. As upgrades go, this one is major since it's replacing a Sony DE925. But as you audio enthusiasts well know, this won't be my last upgrade. Not if I can stay single and gainfully employed.

Cheers, all.

If you lived in Northern Cal, why didn't you just says so. Me and the Raiders live in the same city, we could have hash this thing out at a game!!!!! We could have saved everyone a few verble bumps, and bruises.

Question on the 797 upgrade..hello
Oct 9, 2001 7:46 AM
Can you give me more details on the salesman's promise on the upgrade. Would that be for the full price of the 787 ? Within what time frame ?
I myself am waiting for the 797 to come out into the market .
Question on the 797 upgrade..GreyMark
Oct 10, 2001 6:51 PM
Yes, that would be for the full price of the 797, currently going for $999. At the time, the sales associate assured me that I could return the 787 and pick up the 797 for the then discounted price of $850. I have since found out that this was an introductory sales price and not a permanent discount. Semantics.

In either case, I'm going to give the 787 a go, and if by next week I decide that i can't live without DPLII, NEO, DTS ES discrete(as opposed to just DTS ES matrix which the 787 offers) and the 192kHz/24 bit DAC, then I'll give onecall a buzz. As of right now, though, the 787 at $599 is definitely the best deal going.
$599 is sales talkNorm Strong

You're among friends here. It's perfectly OK to say $600.
