I've been searching for a VCR to replace my old, crummy, mono GE model.
I was originally going to grab a panasonic 4521.
Digging deeper I began to like the Hitachi vtfx665a.

I do NOT need or want SVHS.

What are some great VCRs?
Do not dig deeper!!Smokey

Panasonic make excellent VCRs. As matter of fact one of their VCR model (I be damn if I remember the model number) came on top of ConsumerReport Magazine's VCR ratings last December.

i agree that panasonics make good vcr's, ive had one for a good time
and its never failed me. Best buy carries one that is component size and matches up with the rest of your components, they also carry one made by sony that is also component size. i recently bought the sony just because my dvd and tv were sony, and it looked good to have em all match. the sony is great, and looks good since its black and component size, the panasonic is component size, and probably works better, but doesnt look as pimp.

Nowadays VCRs are treated like disposable diapers. They pack a ridiculous number of features into the box and can cost less than $100. Too bad they're very cheaply made. If you want anything made with better components, you will need to look at S-VHS models, which have dropped so far in price that you might as well get it. The only drawback is that the ones I've seen don't record regular VHS as well as older high quality non-S-VHS models. It just doesn't seem to be a priority.

I still use an older Mitsubishi VCR. Back then, their VCRs were very well made and I don't plan to get rid of mine anytime soon because it plays back regular VHS really well and it has the jog shuttle. Mitsubishi's newer VCRs are very cheap, but not as well made (their VCRs used to be the most expensive ones out there, but now they seem to be priced right along side all the others). I would not recommend Sony because of their ongoing quality control issues.

I've had many VCR's in my time and I love S-VHS VCR's... Right now they are so cheap it's hard to pass up. I bought my now discontinued JVC-HRS 7800 for like $250... and I've seen the lesser models going for $150. For my system I need to have a S-Video output/input, so S-VHS is the only way, and JVC's S-VHS ET recording is AMAZING! It is able to record SVHS-like quality on a regular tape (not just S-VHS tapes, which are still are a fortune to buy).

The copies that you make are comparable to LD or DVD (of course it depends on the source). You should really look into it.
