The Avia Disc-Smokey, Woodman, Swim?AD
Nov 29, 2001 5:10 AM
OK, Got my new 50" Toshiba home last night. Didnt have much time to play with it, but I did a little bit with the Avia disc. My question is, some of the adjustments such as sharpness, and the white & black adjustments didnt work. I would bring up the menu on my TV to make the fine tunings, but there was no effect. Any reason why that may be? For example, I would move the sharpness all the way to the max level, and then all the way down to the minimum level, but nothing happened on the TV.

It is kind of difficult to make some of the adjustments because the TV menu covers a lot of the screen that you are trying to replicate. Is there any way around this?

Thanks guys and let me know if you can help. So far I love the thing!!
Hey Josh, any comments?AD

Do a "dirty" calibration without the disc.Smokey

Hi AD

First of all congratulation on your TV. I am sure you will get many years of enjoyment out of this baby.

I have never used the calibration disc you mentioned so I don't know about the detail steps you have to take to adjust everything. Before I do any heavy duty calibration I would watch TV for three or four days to get a better feel for your TV. You can do a "dirty" calibration by your eye for color, tint, brightness and contrast and sharpness.

After watching programs for three or four days you will know what parameter you need to calibrate with disc. Calibration a TV will take time and patient. It took me two month to calibrate my TV using TV's service menu (without disc) until it was pleasurable to my eye.

So just watch TV for several days until you find out where your TV need to be adjusted.
Also check out following link for more info on black&white and sharpness adjustments.

I'll definitely check out that site. Last night I played around with it a little more, and I saw some changes when playing around with the sharpness, but I still cant see any difference when I try to adjust the white.

I basically had to lower all of the settings, I guess that is because, as they say in the disc, the factory sets all of the settings way too high.
