HT SystemAGL

I am having trouble putting together a decent system for under $3,000. Based on the posts that I have read hear, that should get the job done and put me in the middle of the "HT Pack". Am I trying to put together a super system? See specs below:

My 25" TV was made in 93 and is not S-Video ready, no opticals, etc.
The receivers: the Denon 3802 or the Yamaha RXV1000.
polk speakers floorstanding + the 6 speaker package (RM 6600?)
DVD Player - who knows?

If I buy 5 channel am I already too far behind?

projected costs:

TV - $500+
Receiver - $600 - 700
DVD - $150 - $300
Polk 6 speaker package: $700?????
Any floorstanding speakers $100 - $800 apiece

Am I in way over my head.

If you had $2,000 what would you do (TV, Receiver, HT speaker package + floor, DVD)?

What about $3,000?

everybody has an opinion. Here's mine.

If you want HT (home THEATER), you must have a large (theater like) monitor. If I only had 3k I would get as large a monitor as I could afford then build around that!

I recently was in the market for a new tv and dvd player so that I could start building a HT system. I ended up with the top of the line JVC 32" (not a flat screen) and a Toshiba DVD player. (SD-1700 I believe.) I am very impressed with my setup. If you don't need/want a flatscreen, the JVC has one of the best pictures TV wise........

I've got a 5-speaker Polk system (RT1000 fronts, FX300 rears, and a CS245 center) that I'm going to be selling... let me know if you are interested!

First you want 5.1 sound with a decent tv, good sub, speakers, dvd player, and receiver. I think we can do that given a $3K budget:

SVS 20-39PC - $750
nOrh 4.0 package - $850
Denon AVR-1802 - $400
Panasonic RV-31 - $180
Sony 35" Trinitron - $600

And you even have money left over. :D
