Jan 10, 2002 8:28 AM
I am going to buy a center channel on ebay to complete my 5.1
I am looking at
Klipsch KSC-C1 Center Channel KSCC1 @ around 125$
JBL StudioSeries CenterChannel Speaker @ 120$
Acoustic Research SC2 Center Channel @ 120$

Any suggestions or recommendations?

Timbre matching is very important. So there is no stand alone best center. the best center for you will be the one that matches your system the best. ie If I had JBL mains and surrounds I'd get a JBL center from the same line (northridge, studio etc) even if I could get a sonus farber center and had the 1000 + that is probably costs the best center for my system would still be the JBLs.

Well, my centre isn't timbre matched to my front mains because I have a paradigm CC350 and old boston accoustics A100's and I don't notice any timbre match problems with side to side pans at all. But yeah I guess if I was buying a new system I would want to have 'em all match but since I worship my boston's it doesn't bother me cuz I can't tell.

Now, timbre matching the rears? Come on...NOT necessary and I don't think you would ever know!

Well, although not as necessary as timbre matching the fronts, I would definitely say that it's VERY DESIRABLE to try and voice match the surrounds. I say this because I'm currently saddled with a patchworked system with Paradigm Studio 40s up front and Bose 301s in the back. As far as they go, the 301s are probably Bose's most tolerable product, but because they are less efficient, have a more bloated sounding midrange and low end, and more muffled highs, compared to the Paradigms, my system sounds like two separate soundfields rather than a single seamless 360 degree surround field.

Like you, I long for the old sound of the Boston A-series. I still use a pair of A40s with my analog system, and still regard the T1000 and A400 among the best midlevel speakers I've ever heard (I found them much preferable to the bland and lifeless sounding Mission, KEF, and B&W speakers of that era, and the overly brash and boomy sound I heard from JBL, Polk, Infinity (pre-Kappa), and other American companies.). Glad to hear that the Paradigm CC worked with the A100s. I would've thought that something from Boston or AR would be more comparable (even though the newer Bostons are not quite the same as the A-series models). I would've guessed that the Paradigm CC has a hotter high end and slightly boomier bass than the Bostons, but I guess that since the midrange characteristics are comparable and you're not getting the full range sent to the center channel, that's okay.

Dude, try looking in B.I.C. America. I have the model 53 and it cranks paid 100 for it. I read great reviews on the top of the line model 62 and they were excellent but it would not fit my home entertainment center.. No regrets on the 53. They both play pretty low for a center. Try Etronics.com and some others for best pricing.. You wont go wrong I am running Polk RT16 towers so I needed a fairly large center....
good luck

Match all the speakers. Surrounds and fronts. As audio engineers learn the formats better and are able to make better use of surrounds they will become more and more important. A lot of DVDs now make a lot of use of surrounds and as more and more people move to 5.1 this will probably be a continuing trend. You might not notice it at first but once you spend some time listening to a system that's set up right you'll find that not having timbre matched speakers is distracting.
