Looking to buy a HT system and was wondering what size system I need for a room that is 22' by 15'. Will 300 watt system be good enough or do I need 500 watt system or larger? Is there a formular to figure this out?

Depends on how efficient your speakers are and other factors. Post budget and just what you think the "system" will include. Do you have speakers already ect.....?

Watts per channel or over all watts of system don't really give you a good comparsion. I have a room that's about 25x17 with a vaulted ceiling and my 2800 Denon has plenty of power for the speakers I'm using. It's a 100 watts per channel over 5 channels for 500 watts total but that doesn't mean that if you get a receiver that costs half as much as the Denon with 500 watts total that your going to get the same results. The more expensive, the better the parts that go into the reciver most of time. For that matter if you go buy a 5 channel Amp with 100 watts over all 5 channels it's must likely going to sound better then my receiver because the money is just going for the amp parts not decoders etc. Make sense? Hope this helps.

Depends on what you want to do with it too. Do you play music or do movies or both. Will you have a chance to turn it up aka do you have neighbors? I cant turn my system up over one quarter of the way or they yell. Heck a smaller system may save you money and still do waht you want I think the speakers are the most important part of the set up. Just remember don't get huge speakers and a small amp you will fry it.
