DVD Player Adviceabeck
Feb 21, 2002 11:37 AM
I have a Pioneer 16:9 HDTV. Here are some of the products that I am considering:

Denon DVD-2800
Denon DVD-3800 (will be available in April)
Pioneer DV-37
Pioneer DV-38A
Pioneer DV-42 (will be available soon)
Toshiba SD5700
Toshiba SD9200

Are there any others that I should consider? Should I purchase the same brand as my TV? I have the Denon AVR-4800 should I purchase a Denon product? Please help!
none of themAdam

The pioneer units have horrible build records, the toshibas have the chroma bug, as does the Denon 2800 (though it was corrected). I would get the Panasonic RP91 for about 450.00.
Or if you can wait couple of months...SmokE

abeck,

Six months ago I bought the JVC XV-FA90BK, and for $288, nothing else could touch its features. I know you get what you pay for, but so far, performance on this has been flawless, and the looks and build exceeded my expectations. Quick review of it:

7 disc changer; Prog scan; DVD, CD, CD-R/W, VCD capable; .mp3 decoding; DD and DTS decoders built in (not necessarily a factor with your Denon) the 5.1 output allows the unit to also reproduce DVD-Audio.

With these features, and the details this unit offers, it is really a great buy. 7 disc too much? The same features can be found on other JVC units with single disc capability (and cheaper as well). Great units, low price, nice combination when dealing with HTR products....

HTH,
Ned

as an owner of the jvc 723gd I agree the JVC progressive scan players are very good, unfortunately not quite as good as the pannys'

I too had concerns with the seven disc changer of the JVC. It really is a piece of work to see in operation, but often that means that there is more to go wrong. I use my player not only for dvd's, but also as my cd player, and thus, it gets used much more than just movie time. So far, it has performed flawlessly. If you think the mechanism is unique, it also has play exchange which really shows some engineering! It sits in an entertainment center with a door, and one bad day, with the tray open, my 14 month old daughter tried to shut the door....OUCH! I thought for sure that the mechanism was shot. To my surprise, it had NO effect so far. Still, when I bought it, I purchased the 3 year replacement warranty for an extra $30 just to be sure. So far, so good.

$288 plus $16 shipping (double boxed and packed for the trip) plus $30 for the 3 year extended warranty. That was their best price (no price matching done) when I got it last fall.

As long as the Denon 3800 doesn't have any major issues when it's released (like the 2800 did), then there is a strong chance that it'll provide the best picture out of all the ones you're looking at (including the JVC and panasonics). Or, you may also want to consider the upcoming Denon 1600 which is a spiced up Panasonic RP56. It will have the Faroudja chip, but Denon says the red-flicker problem in the RP56 is resolved with with 1600, and the Faroudja chip has been tweaked for even better performance.

My advise, if you could wait til April, wait til April and find out.

I just bought a Toshiba SD2800 - I'm really not interested in all the bells and whistles IE, MP3,CD-RW ect.

All I'm looking for is a DVD player that has an optical audio out and an S-Video out and that can produce a nice picture and sound. The reason for the question is in one of the response, it's mentioned that Toshiba's have a chroma-bug problem (what does that mean)?

I played it today, not a single hitch, except that the picture wasn't as sharp as it should be. What I mean is that all the images had all the right coloring to them and so forth but just the over all picture almost seemed that it was behind a haze or tint - it just didn't seem pure. The audio was EXCELLENT - full, rich, tight - effortless.

I have it hooked up to a Yamaha 2095. Any suggestions if there are better DVD players out there for about $150 - $200. I still have time to return it.
