HT receiver and tape monitor loops.RichardNC

I am just completing the update of my setup which includes a new Sony STRDA5ES receiver. I was very disappointed to see that unlike my previous ES receiver, this model does not have a tape monitor loop. My previous setup included 2 equalizers. One external (Audio Control) equalizer was used in conjunction with a Spectrum Analyzer, and a microphone, to allow me to adjust that equalizer to get a "flat" reading of the room. I used the internal (ES receiver) equalizer to tailor the sound to how I liked it. I would like to do the same with the STRDA5ES. According to Sony's website they state the following:

--------

Problem Description:

Can An Equalizer Be Connected To A Sony Receiver?

Solution:

An equalizer needs to be connected to the tape monitor loop on a receiver in order to operate. The current line of Sony receivers does not have a tape monitor loop. For this reason, it is impossible to connect a separate equalizer to current Sony receivers.

NOTE: Most Sony receivers feature a built in Digital Signal Processing (DSP) Equalizer. A separate equalizer is unnecessary, and provides no additional benefit to the overall sound output of the receiver.

--------

I know that even though one party may say that something is impossible, and it appears it may be, there may be ways to overcome things to make it work. Does anyone have any ideas?

Thank you in advance...

Richard.

I too have a three head cassette deck, the only way you can monitor a tape being made using a reciever without a tape monitor loop is to connect the analog outputs of the source unit I.E. CD player directly to the input of the tape deck.I have the analog outputs of my CD player connected to the inputs of my tape deck and then the outputs of my tape deck connected to the tape inputs on my reciever, then press the tape monitor button on your 3head deck from source to tape and monitor away. Then for general listening i have my Cd players optical out going to my reciever also.

Thank you for your info (sorry for the delayed response). I have been experimenting with some differing hookups, and your solution does work. I was also attempting to get a 2nd equalizer routed somehow, but have resigned myself to let it go. The combination of digital/analog signals across varying sources just makes it not possible to achieve a setup like I had in the "analog only days". Now, however, my new setup sounds great, just a little less flexible (without the 2nd eq), but that is OK...

Happy listening.
