Which is the best DVR to buy at a very reasonable price?

Is TiVo the only company offering this service?

Is there any way to get around paying TiVo the $10/month?

Guidance please!

hi,

i've had a Panasonic Showstopper with ReplayTV for about 1 1/2 years. i absoulutely LOVE it! and my wife does as well (how's that for an endoresent? a woman loving an electronic device!).
with Replay Tv you purchase the unit and you receive the channel guide free. granted the machines costs more upfront, but there's no monthly fee as with TIVO. with Tivo you can pay $249 for a lifetime subscription (or the $10/mo) -- which then brings the price right up to the ReplayTV units.
also microsoft makes Ultimate TV which is their version. I believe you pay a monthly fee with them as well.
so there are three competing brands.
you can also check the following forum which offers some great info. http://www.avsforum.com/
let me know if you have any other questions
