| What's better, 6.1 DTS or Fake 7.1? | KevMac Feb 21, 2002 2:06 PM | | First question, is there a DTS 5.1 and a DTS ES 6.1? And since 7.1 isn't a true format, I would think DTS ES 6.1 is the superior choice? I am thinking about upgrading to either 6.1 or 7.1, but just wanted to know the facts.
Thanks! |

Yes there is a Dts 5.1 and 6.1 discrete. And yes, I would consider 6.1 discrete a superior format to 5.1. Since you know that there is no "true" 7.1 format, then there is no need to upgrade to it. Just have 2 rear wall speakers in your Dts 6.1 discrete setup.

thanks for the quick reply.. But don't you mean 3 rear wall speakers? I thought the additional speaker in a 6.1 discrete setup was the rear center? |

What you call 7.1 is really 6.1 with two rear center speakers. You have one left surround speaker, a right surround speaker, and two rear wall speakers. When you combine that with three front speakers and a sub, that is what people mistakenly call 7.1. This setup is used with DD EX, Dts ES matrix and discrete.
