VSX-49TX and M&K THX Combination?Digip
Feb 21, 2002 5:27 PM
I am putting together a home theater system without having listend to or seen using the following components:

Pioneer VSX-49TX receiver
Pioneer DVR-7000 DVD recorder
Pioneer DV-47A DVD player
3 - M&K S-150 THX AC
4 - M&K SS-150 THX Tripoles
2 - M&K 350 THX Subs

All this is being attached to a Zenith IQB64W10W HD rear projection TV which I already have.

Any comments positive or negative that you have with this combination of components?

I have a room that is 19' X 19'. Any comments about the M&K speakers combined with the VSX-49TX receiver? The CLR's are going into the slots in the cabinetry above the TV- no option here. The S-150 AC's articulate down 7.5 degrees for better direction to the listening area.

Do I need two 350 subs? They would be placed 16' apart - at each end of the cabinetry. Would the sub balance be better with two or would it be overkill?

I would appreciate any comments greatly. This is a purchase strictly based on recommendtions.
Don't take this wrong please.......Terrible Terrence

D,
Please do not take this the wrong way. You are putting together a great system with some great speakers. Its probably going to look really good, but it is going to sound like shit. Placing speakers in slots may look great, but they usually perform poorly in that kind of setting. Slots introduce early reflections, and unwanted resonances. Early reflections destroys imaging. The resonances destroys timbre. Not only left to right imaging, but back to front also. Also spaced subs are acoustically a bad thing to do. They both should be placed in the same corner for optimal results. Like I said before, it may look great but it doesn't add to the performance of the system.

I do believe it is important that a system look as good as it sounds. But on the systems that I have seen that looked REALLY good, usually performed very poorly.

Great speaker package, not sure about the reciever, two subs are not an overkill. I wouldn't purchase what you're putting together, and then arrange it like you are going to. The loss of performance would make the whole system not a good value. For the way you are going to set this system up, a hometheater in a box would be more appropriate. The components you picked DESERVE proper placement of the speakers. Inside slots is not the answer. If I were going to spend the kind of money you are, I would assure that everything was done properly. First for performance, and second for looks. If I couldn't do it this way because of WAF, then I just wouldn't spend that kind of money.

Just my $3.25 worth(two cents is not enough)

Agree with terrance and would like to add. Why aren't you going to take the time to look at and tryout all this stuff. Seems to me an awful lot to spend based on the opinions of people who aren't going to use your system. My suggestions would be...for receivers..take a look at onkyo, Denon, Yamaha, i'd also include outlaw but since you can't audition those in a store I'll just include the first three. For the DVD player I'd look at the Panny RP91 or the new one that's coming out soon or the RP56 depending on how much you want to spend and if you want dvd-audio. Speakers really really should be listened to before purchase but the M&Ks are probably very nice and you'll probably be happy with it. As terrance said don't compromise too much in the sound department because you're already spending so much on gear. Your room is already pretty bad for sounds (19X19). You should put in some bookcases or something on the walls like acoustic panels to disperse or absorb the sound. Also what are the speaker designs for the front three. rear ported sound pretty bad when confined all around. Stack the subs ina corner or listen to it first before deciding that you need two subs although the room is pretty big and the two subs will probably fill the room out much better.

For any of you out there who have any experience with Digip's (and soon to be mine) setup, I would appreciate any feedback on the compatibility of the components. Specifically, I'm concerned about the fact that I'll be using 4 ohm speakers with a 6 ohm receiver.

My setup is as follows:

Pioneer VSX-49TX (VSA-AX10i) receiver
Pioneer DV-757Ai DVD player
3 - M&K S-150 THX AC
2 - M&K SS-150 THX Tripoles
1 - M&K 350 THX Sub

Digip, if you're out there, how have you faired with your system???

Cheers
