<newbie> sub output vs. pre-amp outputgszczyrb

I am about to put together my first home theater system. I'm a newbie, but at the same time, I'm not satisfied with the off the shelf packages, so I am putting together my own system. I have the speakers - Acoustic Research satelites and center channel. Still need to get a sub and receiver.

The receiver I want - Yamaha HTR-5450, also known as RX-V520 does not have pre-amp outputs, but it does have a subwoofer output. Isn't this essentially a mono pre-amp output?

I just want to make sure that the sub output is not an amplified output. Or if it is, I want to make sure this is not a problem if I buy a powered sub. So far I've been able to figure most stuff out, but this is confusing me.

Thanks,
Greg

Subwoofer is a line level output. So you MUST amplify it to get sound power. This amplification is made by the subwoofer built-in amp.
And the sound information fed to that output by the receiver differs depending upon the program selected.
I you set your front speakers as ¨small¨ , when playing CD the receiver will feed lo-freqs to the sub, relieving the small speakers from the stress caused by boom-boom sounds.
In this situation you can say that´s more or less a mono pre-amp output.
But when playing a DVD movie, subwoofer output feeds the so called LFE (low frequency effects), in short, the boom-bang, whaaams any action movie has plenty of.
If you chose ¨no sub¨ at your receiver´s menu setting, no earth shaking bass will be processed during movie reproduction.

Hope this helps.

pre amp outputs mean you can hook up more powerful amps to the receiver if you wanted to..The sub mono connection is a way to just plug in your sub..So you go buy a POWERED sub get a cable and plug it in and you're good to go..The amp does NOT power the sub..It's not a bad idea to buy a receiver with pre amp outputs in case you feel you need more power in the future..Then you just have to buy a new amp and your set..cool?
