Denon 3802 -vs- Outlaw 950htrob
Feb 22, 2002 12:20 AM
Hey guys hope you can help out here. After looking & listening for 3 months I'm about to upgrade my receiver and was finally going to get the 3802(final 3 were Integra 6.2,Onkyo 797 & 3802). I won't go into details how I came to choose Denon since it's not my question. I had forgot about the Outlaw mainly because can't hear it 1st and no real specs at the time. Well I made the mistake(maybe) of reading the beta testers reviews on the Outlaw and it sounds like it's going to be a benchmark pro/receiver(for lack of a better word).
Now hear is what I like about the 3802 7 powered amps@110watts per channel,multizone,PLII,dts-es & neo and overall sound produced.
My understanding the 950 has multizone,PLII,dts-es & neo and I think even DD-ex and other things I could mention.
I guess what I'm unsure of and this is probably a dumb question but do I need a seperate amp to use this or does it have amps built-in and if so how many?
I was going to get the 3802 for $850 and the Outlaw will be $899. So it seems to come down to can I use the 950 right out of the box and if so do I gamble it will sound as great as it is projected to sound and will it be worth the extra money?
Thanks for any help with this.

I'm not sure if you mean the Outlaw 1050, which is a 5 channel amplifier. The Outlaw 950 is their new pre-amp with all the new decoding options. You cannot hook up the 950 to the 3802, simply because your hooking up a preamp to a preamp(the receiver being a preamp). You can though, add the 1050 as an amplifier to the preamp outputs to have a better amplifier stage, power, and sound. The 950 and 1050 together, preamp and amp, would be much, much better than a stand alone 3802. I recommend you try the 3802, see if the power and sound is too your liking, and if so, don't add on anything. But if not, add the 1050 amp and then you might get the sound your looking for.

The Ourlaw 950 is a Pre-Pro, not a receiver like the 3802, which means that if you get it, you will still need to purchase a power amp. Outlaw is offering a companion power amp for the 950. It is the model 770, but I believe it will sell for around 1700-1800 dollars. While the 950/770 combination is a hell of a deal at it's selling price (based on the specs), it's not the solution for you. Go with the 3802.
have to agree with steelheart 3802 ntpinetop

Does outlaw have an upgrade policy, ie get credit upgrades for the 750 on the 770?

The Outlaw is good but I'd only get it if you were able to get an amp soon. A preamp without an amp doesn't do you any good. (That is not to say you won't stumble across a good, cheap amp at a yard sale, thrift store, pawn shop, etc.) If you can not afford an amp in addition to the 950, go with the 3802.

The 950 is not cheap as you probably know $899 thats a good hunk of change. The bad thing there not ready to ship them yet and $899 is the only price no discounts here.

$900 for some people is cheap but the same amount for others is more than they can afford. The 950 should be ready to ship within the next couple weeks (give or take a couple weeks) and the price may go up. For the price right now there is no competition. I imagine even if it does go up a couple hundred there will be little, if any, competition.
The Outlaw is only a Preamp...jefflam79

Not really a fair comparison. The preamp is useless without a power amp. But when you have both, you are in a whole new level of H/T. Seperates are truely much better than stand alone receivers with internal amplification. My suggestion would be to get a great receiver(like the 3802 or 4802)and use it as a preamp. Add a 3ch seperate amp for your fronts(run the rears off the receivers amp) and you are in the new level of seperates!!! There is no turning back though so beware!!!
