| I think the answer is no but.... | JDaniel Feb 22, 2002 11:37 AM | | I'll ask it anyway. The picture on my Sony 35" tv is very good when viewing DVDs, but much less so when watching cable tv. Some channels are good, others lousy. No big surprise there.
So here's my question: If I purchased a SVHS vcr (Pan, Mitsu, JVC), and routed the cable in to the vcr, and s-video out to the tv, would that help the picture when viewing cable tv? Or would that even work (i.e. does s-video only work with a source material like VHS tape)?
As info, I've calibrated the TV & home theater using the S&V tune-up disc.
Thanks.

The only difference I see is that you now have a s-video connection between the cable (signal - HBO, MSNBC, etc. as opposed to free tv) and the tv. You could put the player on a credit card and see if it makes a difference and return it if it doesn't. My uneducated guess here is that the signal source is the problem versus your equipment. |
| Bryan, you hit the nail right on the head... | SmokE Feb 22, 2002 12:54 PM | | ...when you said the source is the problem, as one can not get better picture as what the source is providing. If using a VCR's s-video output, the only difference you might notice would be difference between TV's comb filter (Comb filter will convert Composite to s-video signal) and VCR's comb filter since signal have to be converted to s-video signal at some point along the way.
But the source (analog cable) is mediocre to begin with so I dont think it is worth it. Just keep what you have.
Your best solution: get satellite and feed the TV via s-video. You will notice the difference right away. |

| Is this analog cable? | Norm Strong Feb 23, 2002 7:28 PM | | Is this the standard analog cable with no box? If so, you may get a better picture by using the comb filter in a very good VCR in place of the one in the TV set. It's certainly the case with my RCA TV set and the JVC S9500 VCR I feed it with. |
