Sony DA333ES Problemdracp
Feb 22, 2002 5:27 PM
Hi:

I'm new to the forum and am having a problem w/my Sony DA333ES Receiver. Wondered if any other DA/ES users out there have had a similar problem and what the resolution ended up being?

It will no longer decypher and play Dolby Prologic Surround while in the AFD mode (this being from DISH Network Satellite Receiver). It originally did this beautifully, but began getting irratic and then stopped all together. It will decypher and play Dolby Digital programming from the DISH source, but not the Prologic surround.

I have it in at a Sony service center, and they "say" they have traced it to a specifc board, but have yet to determine the specific component that is bad...

Any thoughts?

Thanks much,

Bob

I think you're mistaken. AFD is a two channel format when detecting a two channel source. I'm surprised they took the receiver in for repair. Then again it is Sony so anything is possible. The repair techs should know this, so I predict you'll get your receiver back pretty quickly. AFD allows you to switch from a multi channel source (dvd), to a two channel source (cd,tv,vcr) and the receiver will automatically decode the correct format.

If you want to listen to you cd,tv,vcr in prologic, you have to select a surround mode.
that sounds right to mepinetop

The auto decoding mode is only for 2 channel, You will see this on your front display of the receiver 2 speaker icons.youwill have to select one of the surround modes, cinema ex a, b, c, etc. then you will see all the icons fronts rears sub.

I have had the 333ES for almost a year now and LOVE IT! I generally don't like Sony recievers but the ES line is awesome.

About the Auto Frequency Detection: It DOES detect ProLogic and disperse the sound to the rear channels. To test it, watch a movie on TNT, TLC, Discovery Channel or MTV.

TV ProLogic actually sounds 3 times better in AFD mode than in the Specified ProLogic Setting in the Reciever.

For My setup I have Polk Rt600i's for Main, Polk CS245i Center and Polk FX300i BiPole-DiPole switchable Surrounds and the Rear REALLY picks up better in AFD for TV (even though there are only 2 speakers showing as "in use" on the reciever - Give it a try, you'll see).

Hope my 2cents helped.

Hi Darius:

You are bsolutely correct.. ADF on the DA333ES DOES decode PRO-LOGIC surround.. and the sound IS significantly better (rich and full) in ADF than found in the forced pro-logic "Cinema or 3-D" modes. As I think I indicated in my initial post, mine "used" to decode PRO-LOGIC Surround in ADF (and the sound was excellent). Further, having reviewed the manual multiple times, thinking I had messed up settings... it shows PRO-LOGIC as well as all decoding possibilities, specifically on page 32. If reviewing it, you will note PRO-LOGIC Surround is indicated by a "star" referencing it as on of the most common multi-channel modes decoded.

I'm glad to hear you have not had the same situation. Mine worked great - decoding PRo-Logic in ADF up until a few months ago (it is now about 2 years old). First it got "flaky" (intermittent) then it finally quit all together.

Not wishing anyone bad luck, but I was hoping someone had realized a similar problem and knew what the fix had been.

Thanks much,

Bob

Well since both you guys own this receiver, I guess you should know. I do want to mention that this subject has been disscussed before on this forum. If you are correct, then the amendment would be- A prologic source must be detected before DPL can be output. This would include almost all VHS tapes, but in some or many instances(depending on your local TV or cable provider) stereo programming may not have a surround carrier attached to the signal. I would say in this case, AFD would not present a prologic program to your speakers, and only stereo would be decoded.
Hmmm interesting! ntpinetop

I think you're right. I haven't tried AFD with VHS but seeing as how it only workes with some stations, what you stated about the carrier having a DPL signal makes perfect sense.

Thanks,

Darius
