| M&K Subwoofer/Speakers for HT? | bdavis Feb 22, 2002 7:16 PM | | How come nobody ever talks about M&K subwoofers around here (or am I just missing it)? I'm looking to build out a new system (50/50 music/theater) and looking at an Outlaw 1050 paired with an M&K VX-100, MX-70B or VX7-MKII along with some SW85 in wall speakers from M&K--am I making a mistake here? My budget on receiver is right around 500, 500-700 on sub and 1500-1800 for four speakers. Any suggestions? As a side note, I am looking for a "smaller" footprint/visibility as my wife does not wnat big "stuff" sitting all over her new house! thanks! |

BTW, Kreisel (the "K" in M&K) can be considered the inventor or at least one ove the earliest delopers of the consummer sub and of the sat/sub concept back in the late 70's early 80's. If I recall their first consumer product was the "Volkswoofer", i.e. a sub that ordinary people could afford. |
| They're good | gunbunny Feb 24, 2002 11:25 AM | | I don't have much experience with M&K, but the one M&K system I have heard was one of the best HT systems I've heard. I've always thought that a speaker didn't know the difference if it was being fed music or a movie, but I didn't care for it too much for them with music. So go figure.
Just because M&K isn't talked about much on this board doesn't mean they're not any good. You hardly ever see anything about Dunlavy, Soliloquy, Red Rose, Talon, Merlin, Audio Physic, Silverline, or Meadowlark. They're all great speakers and in my opinion a class above the usual brands mentioned on here.
One thing I don't like about M&K is they are so damn ugly. I doubt the wife will like them either.
I've never heard the M&K "in-wall" speakers, but as a general rule I don't think in-wall speakers sound as good as stand mounted or floorstanding speakers. Not even close.
As for your budget... go used/demo! Go over to audiogon.com and buy everything from there. If you can't bring yourself to do this, the Outlaw 1050 is probably your best bet at $500. I may suggest you look at what NAD offers at that price too.
NOTE: Forget about anything more than 5.1 channels. You can't do it right on your budget (or mine)and the money would be better spent on 5.1 quality channels rather than 6.1 or more mediocre channels. |
